What would you most likely do if someone in your family went viral for a racist rant?

suppose someone in your family went viral for a racist rant and puts you in the spotlight for being related to them...what would you do if that happened? let's see what people will vote.

Depends on what was said. If it was actually racist, I'd mostly likely just note that I don't agree with them likely while observing that we live in a free country so they're allowed to say whatever the fuck they want. However, I doubt that they'd say anything actually racist unless it was a cousin disparaging whites yet again and nobody really calls people out over that.

Pretty much this.

Also depends on how close of a family member. Parent, sibling, or grandparent? I'd still support them, family is family. Uncle, aunt, cousin, or more distant? I'd call them an idiot and distance myself.

I would think they were wrong about being racist and tell them so, then continue to love them.

Both of my parents are pretty racist(not from their opinion but trust me they totally are) and theyre both overtly against homosexuality. They know I dont agree and Ive had many debates with them over the years.

If anyone met them though, regardless of your race or sexual orientation, youd think they were very kind and caring people, because they honestly are. They just are wrong about some of their views.

I mean, someone could straight up murder a person and I'd still love them to death. I can love someone without condoning their words or actions. But I don't have that kind of attachment to all of my family.

Depends. If it was my mother, that would be pretty shocking since she's taken in refugees and even gone overseas to assist in delivering humanitarian aid. I might be inclined to support her since she'd need to have gotten pretty jaded by those experiences. Y'know, maybe she's got her reasons.

Some of my uncles have been legitimately dick bagged by the Canadian government over our immigration policies, too. And while I think what they have to say about "the foreigners" is coming from a more genuinely bigoted place, the fact that our government is taking money away from Canadians and paying non-Canadians to come over here and terk er jerbs is pretty damn frustrating.

disagree. You can be lonely with family and you you don't need family not to be lonely.

Besides, as you grow more mature and independent (as all normal humans should) you will naturally drift apart from your family as neither will actually need the other as much

The first could be commenting on a general trend which isn't inherently racist (although it's somewhat xenophobic) whereas the second has just a flat-out racist connotation and a pretty dangerous one at that.

Not true in the least, although I'm amused that posters here believe that sexuality and gender both operate on spectrums yet somehow assume racism, etc, do not. The actual label of racism or racist largely comes down to where individuals place the threshold. And, of course, clearly some acts are more racist than others. The idea that some races don't deserve to live is an infinitely stronger form of racism than whites who incessantly feel the need to tell random blacks that they agree with BLM because they feel guilty.

More importantly, even you tacitly acknowledge that there are degrees of racism in your previous statement by noting that you find they change their behavior as being "really bad"

Dude, she wasn't arrested or fined. Her job was to entertain. She had a video of her insulting part of her target audience. Only an idiot ignores that and no one of any demographic accepts apologies for things from celebrities.

It's not like she was an accountant who said a racial slur. She was a TV personality. If you want to be a public person, make sure your private life is on the up and up and on lock down. The higher and easier you rise the easier it is to lose all of it.

Even less reason to have her in trouble if anything. I mean shock jocks exist and say way worse things.

She was made an example of by kangaroo pc courts.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paula_Deen#Racial_epithet_controversy

"In June 2013, Deen was the target of a lawsuit alleging racial and sexual discrimination filed by Lisa Jackson.[48] It alleged that Deen made derogatory remarks regarding African Americans in the presence of Jackson, whose nieces are half black.[49] Jackson also alleged that Deen mused about wedding plans for her brother with a "true Southern plantation-style theme" with black male servers but rejected the plans "because the media would be on me about that" (Deen denied having used the "N-word" when discussing the wedding waitstaff).[50] The case was heard in August 2013, with the judge dismissing the suit with prejudice, meaning it cannot be re-filed.[51][52][53] Both sides agreed to dismiss the lawsuit "without any award of costs or fees to any party".[54][55] Deen stated in her deposition that she had used the "N-word" at times.[56][57][58][59][60][61] Specifically, she recalled telling her husband about an incident "when a black man burst into the bank that I was working at and put a gun to my head. ... I didn't feel real favorable towards him."[62] Asked if she had used the word since then, she said: "I'm sure I have, but it's been a very long time [...] maybe in repeating something that was said to me ... probably a conversation between blacks. I don't I don't know. But that's just not a word that we use as time has gone on. Things have changed since the '60s in the south."[62]

In the time between the filing of the suit and the suit being dismissed, Deen had cookery programs, publishing deals and endorsement contracts cancelled by Food Network,[63] Smithfield Foods,[64] Walmart,[65] Target, QVC,[66] Caesars Entertainment,[15] Novo Nordisk,[67] J.C. Penney,[68] Sears, Kmart[69] and her then-publisher Ballantine Books;[70] however, several companies have expressed their intent to continue their endorsement deals with Deen.[71] During the same time, sales of Deen's cookbooks soared.[72] Former US President Jimmy Carter urged that Deen be forgiven, stating, "I think she has been punished, perhaps overly severely, for her honesty in admitting it and for the use of the word in the distant past. She's apologized profusely."[73]"
