There is a game you really wanted, so you bought a console primarily just to play that game?

Ive only had two:

I bought a PS1 to play Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen

I bought an Xbox to play Morrowind.

I bought other games later, but generally those were games I wanted to play bad enough that I bought an entire console just to play them. Every other console Ive bought I did so because of the library in general.

Rather have a Switch, but this was $220 cheaper.

360 for dead rising and a vga cable to hook to a monitor for proper text size also for dead rising.

Its ok now but i thought dead rising was 10/10 when it first came out.

Bought a 360 just to play Armored Core 4/FA with a not-shitty controller. Regretted it because I could have waited to play them on PS3 with the Wii U Pro Adapter >_>
Bought a PS3 just for Demon's Souls... didn't really play much else besides the Atelier series on it, and a ton of BlazBlue
Bought a PS4 for Nights of Azure, now my favourite console ever

I don't think so? Even if I was buying a console with a game or two in mind, it was also for a lot of other games including expectations down the line. I'm also not sure how often I only had 1 or 2 things in mind. However, I suppose the prospect of Pokemon always factors into my handheld buys and KIU was the other strong considering for the 3DS.

Not really. I bought a PS3 to play the The Last of Us when it came out but I had always planned on getting one eventually anyway for Demon's Souls and the other exclusives I had never played. TLoU just sped up that decision a bit.

I had other games I just didn't play them much.

Hyrule warriors and Mario Maker (I had more than these, but these two were played the most after smash)

Yeah. I got the special gears of war 4 xbox one just to play it, since I am a huge gears fan.

I sort of regret it since I ended up not enjoying gears of war 4 as much as gears 3. The gameplay is still great, but the stupid microtransaction system to unlock new skins kind of turned me off from the game.

I bought the Switch with Metroid Prime 4 very much in mind (and Shin Megami Tensei V), even if virtually nothing is known about it/them so far.

Bought a PS3 specifically for Tekken Tag 2. Built up a collection for it now. Bought a 3ds for mh4u. That's still the only game I own for the system.

Agreed with the notion ITT that Smash 4 was a letdown, though. I love playing Mario Kart and Smash for the unlockables and I dislike this recent trend of having almost everything unlocked from the jump.

Getting a Gamecube mostly for Smash Bros. Melee is the only time I bought a system primarily for one single game, and it was the only game I played on it for nearly a year. The GC eventually became one of my all-time favorite consoles thanks to later games I didn't know about at the time, but I first bought the system for just Smash.

When I got my first DS it was mostly for Animal Crossing Wild World, but I knew for sure that Pokemon was coming to the system and I would be buying one eventually. My PS Vita is basically a Nepstation since like 90% of my playtime is with the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, but that's over multiple games. Those systems might sort of count.
