Going to a restaurant 5 minutes before closing should be punisheable with the death penalty tbh

then why the fuck is that restaurant advertising itself as being open then?

This is what I don't understand....if the policy is to get employees out on the dot at a certain time, why not just move the closing time back 30 minutes? Why try to have it both ways which pisses off both customers and employees?

Because pitting them against each other takes heat off of them for bad practices. Businesses do that all the time to distract from their own responsibility over the issue.

But the business winds up losing money over it. Why would upper management, officers, and shareholders be okay with that?

My assumption is that they don't lose as much as they gain by not paying their employees an extra 30 minutes a day perpetually. Customers get pissed at the employees for their shitty attitude and employees get pissed at customers for coming in later, and neither thinks to go "huh, this business is shitty, I'll take my money or skill elsewhere". Sure, a few customers will speak with their wallets, but the vast majority of people will put up with bad service if the next best alternative is 10 minutes away, and the vast majority of retail employees can't afford to collectively jump ship and leave a business hanging.

We stopped talking about employees staying after hours PAGES ago. It's mostly been about customers coming in before closing and exactly how far before closing is considered "fair" and at what point or under what conditions it's considered bad form.

It turns out it's 11 minutes as long as you're out of the door before closing and don't mess up the shelves.

My big issue is that if you're late closing the store there's the potential of write ups and such. My boss is cool so she doesn't write us up, but the extra payroll is taken out of her vacation time.

Implausible situations like that don't make for a strong argument. If she really cared that much about buying things for her kids she would've came earlier.

Implausible my ass. You think people don't run out for milk at the last minute every day? The reason she didn't see she needed milk was likely because she was doing laundry and giving baths after working 7-5. If you think that's rare, you are dumb.

It's been said multiple times itt why employees can't work unauthorized overtime. By 9:58 the store is pretty much closed up anyway.

But it's not closed. And it has also been said multiple times itt that shit policies aren't a customer problem, they're a company problem. If they'll fire you for staying over because you were helping a customer then fuck it, probably was a shit place to work for anyway.

I don't even know why you guys are trying to argue this, lol. There's literally no excuse for coming into the store at 9:58.

When I was 15 I worked I started working inna reatuarant in a small town. We closed at 9, we tried to have everything in the kitchen cleaned up by about 8:45 because for the most part, no one would come in for more than a slice of pie by 8:30.

Over the years, we had plenty of customers come in past 8:45 and what I discovered is that most people in my position are lazy, entitled, lack motivation and have really bad attitudes. Yeah, if a customer came in to take up our time, you'd have to stay an extra 20 minutes to feed someone/deal with them. It really wasn't that bad.

But the relentless bitching from my co-workers? Absolutely RIDICULOUS. It was so impressive how bitter and petty people could be because they had to add an extra 15-30 minutes to their shift that was typically 5-6 hours (which also happens to be what most retail people work).

Like, restaurant and retail jobs aren't even real jobs. You don't make a career out of it. The people that work them and are incredibly bitter and spiteful in their work prove to everyone why they are in their position.

Look, any day you get to have a job is s good day, remember that.
