Seems some people are taking the closing time too literally and think it's acceptable to go in at 9:59 if they can get in and out fast enough. That's really up to the store/management if that's okay, but the problem is these people are incapable of understanding context and don't ever stop to think they just because they can, doesn't mean they should. They also don't understand that the employees aren't really in charge of when the store closes.

And these people think the employees aren't allowed to complain about last minute customers because fuck them, right? They're just lazy, incompetent fools with easy jobs who don't have any feelings whatsoever.

You can tell the people who have too much time on their hands and never got to experience being swamped that your schedule becomes really tight.

Those who are like that deserve no opinions on threads like this. Bunch of entitled children.

You're right, shit happens. Guess what? At 2 minutes to closing, we don't give a fuck. We want to go home. You just need to accept that and go elsewhere. WE. ARE . NOT. YOUR. SLAVES.

So close earlier.

Are you intentionally this fuckng stupid? Do you use your brain for ANYTHING?

WTF? he's saying that if the closing time of 10pm is getting too late because employees need to be home by 10:15 or whatever for some reason, then close the store at 9:30 so that customers will stop coming in after 9:30 allowing everyone to finish their closing work by 10.

If you have a sign that says you're open until 10, EXPECT people to come in and up until that time. No amount of bitching and whining at the customers is going to change that. Because that's standard practice, people will expect service and to be able to shop.

I find it interesting that you mention customers and people in the same sentence. Are they customers, or are they people? There's a huge difference.

Customers are a type of person.

No...customers have no humanity.

Here's a fun reversal I personally experienced. When I worked as a cook at a moderately large restaurant chain the store didn't open until 6 a.m but we were expected to be there and work off the clock by 5:30 a.m (literally system was locked until 6 a.m). If we didn't do this not only would no one have a job and none of the customers would be pissed we didn't have their morning gruel ready immediately. I'm guessing someone will come in and defend this of course as they wank off their corporate overlords with their free hand.

Literally no one in this topic has defended employees being forced to work off the clock. It's been stated many, many times that this is highly illegal and should be reported to the authorities.

God damn, this is a dumbass thread with whiny entitled babies on both sides.

Restaurant employees: Learn to preclose your establishment. Clean and break down what you can, while still having the food available. Through my teens and twenties I worked at several different restaurants, and there are always ways to clean up ahead of time, there are ways to rig the equipment so that you can still make the food without making a new mess. Even if you do make a bit of a mess, it will usually be minor and can be wiped up in a few seconds right after you finish the order. Learn how to pre-count your register - count it down to it's minimum (was usually $100-$150 most places I worked), and if someone pays cash you hand them their change and then count out their total and separate it inside the drawer. If someone buys something that costs $8.62 and pays with a $10, you give them their $1.38 change and count out $8.62 to set aside and add to the end-of-day deposit. Mop your floors and wipe down your tables in advance - if someone walks in on your fresh mopped floor, you only have to re-mop exactly where they walked, which should take a grand total of 30 seconds.

Unless you get a late "rush," you won't be delayed more than a few minutes.

Retail employees: Let that last minute customer in and inform then that the store will be closing in (example) 10 minutes. Offer to help them find the items they need in the time available, be courteous, and explain that closing time is when all customer activity is expected to be concluded, not simply a cutoff for letting people in the store. As with restaurant workers, preclose your store. Fold your soft goods and face your shelves in that last hour when it's slow. Count down your register as described above.

Restaurant and retail employees: If you're hourly and your employer makes you work off the clock for any reason, file an anonymous complaint with your state's Department of Labor. If your employer has more than a handful of employees (likely) the complaint can't be traced back to you. Once the DoL gets involved, your employer will shape up - the fines they incur for this kind of shitty behavior will far outweigh just paying their employees for their hours worked.

Customers: Do try to avoid being that last-minute walk-in, but if you have to be polite and apologize for coming in at the last second, even if you aren't really sorry. Understand that a restaurant may be out of certain items; this happens surprisingly often as prep schedules are usually pretty tight (to avoid waste) and if a particular item has been popular throughout the day there's nothing the night crew can do about it. Also understand that a retail business's closing time is the time that customer activity is expected to be concluded so that employees can get off the clock - it's all about the bottom line to the business, and payroll has the single largest impact, especially when it creeps into overtime.

And to everyone itt screaming "we aren't your slaves" - Get. A. Fucking. Grip. Nothing delegitimizes your complaint like comparing yourselves to slaves. That's a fucking slap in the face to anyone throughout history who has been subjected to actual slavery, not to mention modern slaves and sweatshop workers. You are an employee, and you have a job. Your job may suck, but it's still a job, not indentured servitude or slavery. Your world won't implode because you were delayed at work for 5 minutes, or 20, or even an hour. I've had nights like that in food service. Yeah, it sucks, but if you're a well adjusted person you get over it about a minute after you finally walk out of the building. Hell, in my current job (medical equipment delivery) I may very well find myself expecting to leave at 5, but get a new delivery order that sends me an hour and a half away, with an hour setup time, and not get home until 9 or later (It's happened). Yes, it pisses me off, but I'm usually over it by 5:20 and once I get the setup complete I'm actually happy that I got to help people in need, even if it did ruin my entire evening.

Crazy thing just happened that reminded me of this topic. Jack in the Box near my house closes at 2AM. I decide I want a burger and some fries and drive over there. Usually I prefer walking inside but only the drive thru is open passed 11PM. I show up at about 1:48 and the idiot employee told me they were closed. I am obviously ticked off and read their own store hours but all they do is apologize over and over. Looks like they want a terrible review written up about them.

Seriously

I know a majority of retail workers are not so entitled to say "yeah I know we're open for ten more minutes but I'm not letting you in because we're pre-closing," but the few in here really are entitled kids.
