I'll be getting it on PC, so I'll likely keep this topic update(or make a new one) with all of my impressions.

It's really a crapshoot. Most of their games play perfectly fine. The most common issue is with games like DW8E(and DW8XL) being ported from the PS3 version and not the newer console. And in the case of those two games, there's also controller mapping issues.

All of the SW games have played great.

And the spinoff series are perfect ports, as far as I can tell. 60 FPS in 1080p, and they look fantastic.

Okay, I think I understand how Story Mode works now.

One of the earliest things they flat-out confirmed is that there's 11 chapters in the game.

They also talked about individual story modes earlier than that, but I thought they rolled back on it. Now, I think those 11 chapters are just how each character's story mode is divided. Like, Sun Jian's will take place from 1-3, Gan Ning's 4-6, etc.

They described which chapter covered what, but I can't remember any of the titles. I do believe that only the 11th is dedicated to Jin.

It's also worth keeping in mind, that not everyone may have the same goals in each chapter. So even if Jin is in fact relegated to a single chapter, the time spent playing could still be pretty lengthy. Maybe more than some of the other chapters. I.E., it might take Liu Bei a longer time to complete Chapter 3 than Sun Jian.

Chapters/Eras might only dictate the actual landscape of the open world and its various factions.

tl;dr I'm 90% sure you pick a single character and play with them.

Also, musou playthroughs are relegated to their own saves. So for example, you can play through a bit of Zhao Yun's, stop, and pick up from where you left off with Xiahou Dun's.

Also, they did confirm that some character's stories will be shorter than others. So whereas Dian Wei, Sun Jian, and Dong Zhuo will likely have shorter stories, Zhao Yun's and Sima Zhao's will probably last ages.

But the game doesn't advance until you complete the main quest, so a playthrough can lost as long as you'd like.

And they confirmed Free Mode's in, so I assume you can play chapters you've beaten with any character.

What protection? The current portrayal as say in 7 or 8 made it very clear Liu Bei is surrounded by opportunists and other kinds of terrible people.

Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, and Guan Yu are protected and can do no wrong. By extension, so are Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun.

In Liu Bei's case, notice how it's never entirely his decision to betray Liu Zhang in the games. Or how they never depict his betrayal of Lu Bu.

Liu Bei and Zhao Yun being protected, I'll acknowledge. Last few games have done the effort to nuance Guan Yu and Zhang Fei a bit more. Especially the entire situation surrounding Jing province/Fan castle.

Zhuge Liang, I am not entirely certain on, but last few games do have shown a bit more of his scheming.

They stopped hamfisting it so much in 8, as long as you're playing the other Kingdoms.

In 7, they still gave Hua Xiong to Guan Yu even in Wu's story mode. They tease it with Sun Ce, but nope.

But yes, in 8, they were a bit more neutral regarding the Jing conflict, as long as you're playing on Wu's side. Even still, Guan Yu gets to be the badass no matter who you're playing as; whether he's beamed up into space or dies on his feet. I don't even like DW5, but they at least showed his beheading at the hands of the Lu Meng.

Also, I had the Liu Bei and Lu Bu scenario switched around. The point is, Liu Bei was really just an opportunist and despite that, he's portrayed as a saint in almost every form of media. And Guan Yu and Zhuge Liang tend to receive better treatment than he does. Dynasty Warriors is no different.

But yes, then DW really protects Liu Bei like that. The impression I get from DW8's portrayal of Shu is a genuinely trying Liu Bei, surrounded mainly by opportunists.

Would it really be that much to ask to have a more accurate depiction of the historical figures?

It's just what it is. Especially since the game is based on the novel that inspired such fantastical portrayals, and not necessarily history.

I've come to accept it.

Really, I'm hoping Wu takes a full-on heel turn rather than what they were made out to be in 7. My favorite character is Gan Ning and I absolutely loved him for his ruthlessness, but they don't really show that beyond DW3. Nowadays, he's just all "Hurr-durr, I like to fight!".

But oh well :P

Xiahouji was captured by his men wandering the Shu border and forcefully wed to him.

Even aside from that, Zhang Fei is a well-documented asshole.

But I don't put too much stock in his or Gan Ning's "atrocities" due to cultural standards back then. Hell, even with the likes of Pan Zhang, Zhu Huan, Gan Ning, and Ding Feng, Sun Quan was probably the worst of them all.

I'd agree, but revising history to turn a statutory rapist into a caring husband, might not be the best idea in today's culture.

Edit: also to get a bit more back on-topic. I'm really liking the designs for the unique officers. Just questioning the sanity of including Xiahouji.

Xiahouji's inclusion bothers me for a few reasons.

1. She's not that deserving, plain and simple. Especially over other possible candidates. This alone makes her pretty bad.

2. The fact that she looks so young alludes to the fact that Koei's going to make a point of her being wed at such a young age. Marriages of such young women were normal for the time, so this in itself doesn't bother me. That brings me to point....

3. They can get away with Zhenji being the game because they never have to address her death or the nature of it in any way whatsoever. However, there's no way of getting around the fact that Xiahouji was wed to Zhang Fei and it's portrayal is going to be completely corrupted to make it look extremely happy and positive. This is a rather normal occurrence in the series, but with an entirely different context here.

Even still, I can stomach all of that. What really irritates me is how much younger she looks than Zhang Fei's own children. That bothers the fuck out of me.

But whatever. What's done is done.

Lu Bu was foolish, but I've never cared for the "mindless dog" portrayal.

This humanizes him a bit more, but still maintains that "I'm better than you" attitude.

Yuan Shao's voice would be great for Yuan Shu.

Even post-DW6 Yuan Shao shouldn't sound that nasally. I do like the change of tone in his line though. That was particularly great on the VA; just a bit miscast here.

Zhang Liao's voice is the best VA he's had, yet. Didn't think I'd say that for anyone from this dub. Gives me hope for Gan Ning.

While I do think I prefer Douglas Rye overall, I like that the new VA brings more gruffness to Cao Cao. It's a good voice for him, nonetheless.

Okay, I heard Zhang Fei. I think the issue here is the direction.

The tone of the voice itself is good for Zhang Fei. But the way the line was paced made him sound awkward(a common problem with this dub). I can see where the Xu Zhu comparisons come from, but I heard a bit more Dian Wei, personally.

I haven't heard Yuan Shu yet. I wasn't expecting him to be in this video.

Also, I can't remember if I made a point of it in this thread, but Free Mode is indeed confirmed.

For those confused about the character select screen, it looks like you pick a chapter and then pick a character.

On the character select screen, you can see selectable characters that are missing on the previous chapter select screen. I.E. You can clearly see Yue Jin as a locked, but selectable option for Chapter 2, despite his silhouette not being on the previous screen for Chapter 2.

You can also see how you progress characters through chapters. Cao Cao's render can be briefly seen in the Chapter 1 category, before being moved down to Chapter 2. There's a line connecting the progression of his musou mode.

I'm thinking the silhouettes seen on the chapter select screen are just there to show you when you unlock characters. I.E. You can see Zhang Liao's silhouette in the Chapter 4 category, but that doesn't necessarily mean he isn't playable in Chapter 2 under Dong Zhuo/Lu Bu's forces in his Musou mode(although he still might not be, regardless of where he starts).

You can see this easily with Yue Jin, Li Dian, and Cao Xiu all being selectable in Chapter 2.

The voices are starting to sound more and more like an 80's Kung Fu overdub...

Voice acting of this quality is rare nowadays, or atleast in the games I tend to play... And I even kinda liked the English dub for Arc Rise Fantasia...

Edit: also still the lack of blood and clothing damage or anything in cutscenes. Basically there was nothing indicating Dong Zhuo even got hurt at all, never mind dying...

Edit2: the video also cuts of at what seems to be the first genuinely decent voice...

Also, the game's gone gold, so.... Everything is pretty much final. What remains to be seen is whether or not the AI was "turned off" for all of the demo footage.

That coupled with the English voices makes it seem like a poor copy-cat, just with added open worldness at times.

I actually love the costume designs for this one. It's only a step behind 8's imo. And 3's, I guess.

With the new open world format, the UI needs to be simplistic so as to not cover the screen with all of the new necessary information that the player might need as opposed to before. It also needs to be able to fade in and out seamlessly without causing too much of a distraction.

It was pretty much known they were going cheap with the dub, the minute it was a revealed they went to an all-new studio.

I guess the knew batch of gameplay shows a part of my problem is just the current Wei designs. As for characters like Cao Ren, Li Dian and Yue Jin before, I had to see the face to guess who they were.

This batch had me all confused, hey it is Xiahou Yuan, but why is he wielding the flail? Sees face, oh, it is Ren...

Someone said they wanted to go more realistic with the costumes right? Maybe that means more bland for me and me thus having more difficulty telling characters apart...

I've almost completely lost interest in this game. The realistic approach, as people call it, has only hindered the level of imagination and variety for everything.

The inherent attacks of each weapon type in particular are what disappoint me the most. In terms of functionality, the only things that set them apart from each other are the basics found in all Action games: attack speed, range, direction, hit count, knockback distance, and whether they slash/swipe, stab/jab, shoot/throw, or grab.
As compared with DW8 and its expansions, there are no unique gimmicks or effects like the Woven Cloth's ability to teleport enemies, the War Scroll's ability to control allied soldiers, the War Trident's elemental buff charges, and so much more. Visually, most of the attacks are just as bland and basic as they are in functionality. At least the moves unique to each character aren't as dull.
