First things first: it's time to kick Wickle's ass again:


For defeating Wickle, a random employee just handed me company property without permission:


With Lapras in hand, I proceeded to the CEO's office. Is it just me, or does Giovanni's sprite look like the Joker?


Anyways, Giovanni is a breeze when you've got a Grass-type, so the fight lasted about ten seconds.


This guy sure likes to flaunt his wealth:


Off to Sabrina I go! The fight was a nicer, more competitive bout than other recent gym leaders. Also, I enjoy the design of the gym a lot. Older graphics really help to prevent you from getting your bearings with each teleportation.


Off to Cinnabar Island I go, but first - a pitstop in the Seafoam Islands. I grabbed a few new Pokemon on my pass through:




Eventually, I grabbed my personal favorite legendary Pokemon, and my third member of my final party. Meet Washington!


On Cinnabar, my first stop was naturally the lab. Visiting the so-called resurrection specialist (Jesus?), I learned that this particular individual had no doubt in his own abilities:


He offered to bring my fossils to life, and naturally my first action was to determine names for these prehistoric Pokemon:



On my way to the Cinnabar Gym, I learned that the door was locked - off to the worst dungeon in the game! I hate the old abandoned lab design. Plus the encounter rate is just excruciatingly bad. At least it gave me opportunity to evolve George III:

They're both kind of the same game. I only played XD, but I think it kinda plays better than Coliseum? Because they're kind of same-y, I think a lot of people who play both do prefer Colosseum, just because it was new, but I think XD fixes some problems Colosseum had.

I love both games, but they are kind of same-y. XD is definitely more polished and probably better overall, but it's also longer. There's some cool things about Colosseum, though, too. The fanbase has always seemed kind of split down the middle as to which is more preferred, at least to me.

I picked up a Pokemon before challenging Blaine:


Now that Blaine's gym was unlocked (and I worry about the people inside who couldn't leave to use the restroom or get food and drink), I sought some advice from one of the hostages inside:


The trainers here all seemed to have very deep, moving backstories:


For the record, this sprite they use for Blaine is just the generic fat guy sprite in every damn city:


Why is everyone so concerned about whether I have Burn Heal or not?

I immediately hopped on a winged servant to travel to Vermillion, where I ran into this guy who seems more and more like the Joker every time I see him:


Venusaur did grass attacks and wrecked what vestiges of hope Giovanni had.


Turns out, Wickle is actually Leonardo DiCaprio's character in Django Unchained:


After beating Wickle, I feel like he didn't realize he had lost:


I passed through Victory Road, and in the process picked up Jefferson, another member of my final party:


Indigo Plateau was created by a hoarder:


As I saved one last time before taking on the Elite Four my final party consists of the following:
Eisenhower the Venusaur
Ford the Gyarados
Washington the Articuno
Adams the Zapdos
Jefferson the Moltres
Wilson the Dragonair

The Elite Four were enjoyable fights, but my team was prepped for victory:



After Agatha, I no longer had a Dragonair:


I feel like Lance was irritated that I copied him:


Turns out that, despite Wickle leaving towards Viridian City and never seeing him again on the Victory Road, he still beat me to the Elite Four. There's a new Champion in town already!



And so my final battle began:


But legendary birds proved to much for him:


Oak apparently "Came when [he] heard [I] beat the Elite Four!" If that wasn't enough sexual harassment, he went on:


I got logged in as Champion, and so I had completed Pokemon Red successfully! But first, I wanted to grab Mewtwo and cap this part of the playthrough in style:

It's time to Press A to do it!


Pokemon Snap was about 3 hours in the end; did I enjoy this replay? Honestly, yes. I would love to see this game come back in a sequel or reboot on the Switch. That's actually a great system to utilize some new technology in the attempt to modernize the game. The general gist of the game (for those who haven't played) is that Pokemon sit around and you take pictures of them for points:


It looks like that most of the time. Points are based on size and front-facing photos, with a double point modifier if the Pokemon is in the center of the photo. You get bonus points for Pokemon doing special activities or for additional Pokemon of the same type in a photo:


Levels are set up as courses. Random teleportation devices are set up around the island, once again betraying the crazy technological superiority of Professor Oak to the poor fools around him.


I ended up getting photos of 63 different Pokemon; after each level, you can see your Pikmin Report (Hey, cross-branding is cool) and check the number of points you've scored for all of your best photos for each Pokemon:


Occasionally, Professor Oak's true motives will shock you:


As you score more cumulative points, Oak will provide you special items that can be used to open up new levels (entrances are found in previous levels) or coax Pokemon to perform special actions. Here is a photo of an Electrode committing suicide after I gave him an apple:




The special photos all have very on-the-nose designations:


Here's a picture of a Charizard attempting to light me on fire. I feel like future iterations of Pokemon Snap should include a health bar:


Most of the level access involves pushing Pokemon onto switches. Then very obvious mechanical gates open up. Why couldn't Oak just open these in the first place? They are clearly man-made.


The level descriptions are the highlight of great writing:


As you can see, I'm very bad at throwing items at Pokemon:


This was my proudest photograph of the run:


There really are some weird situations in this game. A random Zapdos is born out of an egg sparked by Pikachu; Legendary Pokemon can't be hatched from eggs, so I call bullshit on that. But more on the point, within seconds of its birth, the Zapdos begins powering a generator. Why would it even know it should do that?


Eventually, you get to take a photo of Mew (after you pelt it with hundreds of items), and Oak gives you a very lackluster ending:

People have been calling for Pokemon Snap 2 since the Wii, but requests were especially high on the Wii U because of the game pad.
