Board 8 > Donkey Kong Country 3 is pretty disappointing

I never played the game as a kid, despite being obsessed with DKC1-2. I'm just past the first island now, and my two biggest takeaways are:

1. The soundtrack is a massive step back. The ambient music is the single best thing about the series, and it seems totally lacking here. I can get completely absorbed in 2, but 3 is closer to a Mario game than anything, with hints of beauty every so often

2. Baby Kong SUCKS. What utility does he even have? This is way worse than DK was in the original

The game was okay and gets way more hate than should, but it is a step back. I actually really like that each level had its own gimmick, keeping you on your toes. And 100%ing it seemed less harder than in the other games, especially with the flag indicators on each level.

But overall it felt like he was trying to copy some of the other games and failed. Like all of the normal enemies are just cheap copies of other enemies from other games. And they really got a hard-on for that elephant buddy, it's by far the most overused buddy in the game and it wasn't really that cool in my opinion

My problem with the level gimmicks is that they are nonsensical. Like why are the rats spinning hamster wheels to keep the doors locked? The other games generally followed some logic, even if it was cartoonish. This is just bizarre.

I'm still planning on completing it though.

Since you asked, Kiddy Kong does have a few tricks. Team throwing now differs depending on which Kong is doing the lifting. Also, Kiddy has some awkward water skipping ability that's useful about twice in the game.

But yeah, they could have reworked Donkey Kong to hold barrels in front of his body and the game would barely be different.

Eh I definitely think the music in the first world is considerably worse than most of the soundtrack. There's some legitimately good songs, even if they mostly don't reach 1 and 2.

It's still a pretty great platformer.

DKC3 has some good songs like Nuts and Bolts, Rockface Rumble and Frosty Frolics. But the rest of the soundtrack is mostly forgettable.

And yeah Kiddie Kong sucks, this is the only game he was ever in for a reason.

About the music...

The first DKC was composed primarily by two people, David Wise and Eveline Fischer (and, uh... Robert Beanland, but that's not important). Wise ended up doing the soundtrack for DKC2 while Fischer did DKC3, which is why they sound so different.

The funny thing is that when DKC3 was ported to the Game Boy Advance the entire soundtrack was changed and composed by David Wise instead, and it sucked (and not because of hardware limitations, it's just bad). So while I didn't like DKC3's OST that much as a kid because it was too different, in retrospect I've come to really appreciate it.

the level design is fantastic, just as good as the other two games. the reason the game gets hate is just cause it's horribly un-fun to play as kiddy, he's too slow.

If it didn't follow DKC2 (which was outstanding), it would probably be viewed better. Definitely the worst of the original 3 though.

I do too. And by a wide wide margin at that. All 3 games are amazing. But I just love everything about 3

It's a complete 180 from its predecessor but to the Extreme. (DKC2 was probably the darkest of the trilogy while this was the sugariest)
