My friend let me play up to completing the 'kingdom' with the dinosaur in it, but it didn't particularly blow my mind.

Personally I wasn't hit with that feeling of awe that I got way back when I played Galaxy. That game had so much cool gravity and perspective stuff.

nostalgia is a powerful drug

Galaxy was my first console game and I was like 7 or 8 so yeah nostalgia certainly factors in. But even so I seriously love the mechanics and designs of that game. They pretty much did whatever they want. Cookie galaxies, or riding a manta across huge tracks of suspended water, I still remember a ton of the game.

Also, I was absolutely wowed by BotW despite having familiarity with the older Zelda games, but Odyssey didn't feel like as big of a jump. The cappy possession didn't feel that different from normal power-ups. Dino = Mega Mario, Frog = frog suit...

SMO is the only good 3D Mario. 64 was amazing for its time but has aged like old lady farts. Sunshine and the Galaxy games were always bad. The only real drawbacks to SMO are the camera being about as shitty as it was in 64, and Luncheon Kingdom being garbage.

I sort of feel like it does.

Take the t-rex for example. That was clearly a big selling point of the game, it was used in promo material and stuff, they put it in the first area to really show off, etc. When you go to take control of it, I feel like there's 2 very distinct ways it can go:

1) WOW I'm controlling a giant t-rex this is so cool
2) This thing controls awkwardly and doesn't have much meaningful gameplay

I'm not saying there's anything particularly wrong with being in either category, but some people are just not the kind of people who will fall into the first category, and with that wow factor gone there isn't that much left there for them.

I really like it but it's just missing that Galaxy feel. Idk why, but Galaxy felt magical. 1 way more than 2 obviously. Like 64 and Sunshine didn't invoke that feel either.

Guess that whole menu jingle is a bad tease to the Galaxy theme and I guess the Wiimote ironically felt way better.

If it doesn't impress you it's done with after a minute or two. The game doesn't really outstay its welcome for any of these moments. The point of that moment is to give the player a power trip and to set-up the stage that you'll be able to capture all sorts of things during the game. Which I think it does rather well even if you don't particularly like controlling the t-rex.

Asking "What's the point of all this" could be applied to literally any video game on the planet. What a fucking pointless criticism.

If you want to boil the game down to its most basic form, it's just a giant sandbox you explore for macguffins. If you don't find exploring and traversing game worlds like that enjoyable, then why play a Mario game in the first place lol.

I don't think it's necessarily a criticism, it's a statement.

What's the point of all this? To deliver a compelling, interesting story (RPGs)
What's the point of all this? To mechanically challenge the player and force them to improve their skill (platformers?, among others)
What's the point of all this? To have two players compete head to head to outplay each other (fighting games)

What's the point of all this? To have the player control a tank.

If anything is criticism here, it's not asking what's the point, but rather the point he came up with. And it's only criticism if you think that's inherently less meaningful than other potential points it could have

Lmao what?

I only got to play that part and wasn't sure if I'd get to touch any more of the game from him so I made a topic about it. Dunno why you're in such a knot rn tbh

I did get to play some more, and I've realized that the Dino area doesn't seem indicative of the rest of the game. They put some kinda challenging (imo at least, I am awful at platformers despite enjoying them) platforming right past the houses in the sand world and I really enjoyed it

However now my main concern is enjoyment of the console itself. It emphasizes motion controls for games like Odyssey so I don't want to play with joysticks attached but that means I can't grip the console. And THAT means I have to prop it up on a flat surface since the stand sucks. I don't own a TV in my dorm and apparently it's impossible to get HDMI input into laptops according to my research

- Spin around with the L stick until Mario spins and then throw Cappy
- I believe you can do a downward throw by throwing Cappy immediately after a buttstomp but I've never bothered

You don't have to use either of these moves throughout the game.

That's incredibly subjective, especially considering most people agree the best part of the gameplay is being able to switch back and forth between multiple different transformations to accomplish a given task.
