you might as well ask why George W Bush would want to whitewash himself. It's silly.

Because in the 16 years since, I think most Democrats have come to recognize the war on terror and the buildup of the national security state as bad things.

Furthermore, Schumer here isn't actually referencing those things; he's hoping that people have forgotten that's how Bush and the country actually responded to 9/11, in favor of a sanitized "post-9/11 coming together."

I think it's more of a respectability politics thing, as described in this article: https://www.currentaffairs.org/2017/04/how-liberals-fell-in-love-with-the-west-wing

The lack of any serious attempts to change anything reflect a certain apolitical tendency in this type of politics, one that defines itself by its manner and attitude rather than a vision of the change it wishes to see in the world. Insofar as there is an identifiable ideology, it isnt one definitively wedded to a particular program of reform, but instead to a particular aesthetic of political institutions. The business of leveraging democracy for any specific purpose comes second to how its institutional liturgy and processes look and, more importantly, how they make us feelvirtue being attached more to posture and affect than to any particular goal. Echoing Sorkins 1995 film The American President (in many ways the progenitor of The West Wing) it delights in invoking seriousness and the supposedly hard-headed pragmatism of grownups.

it sounds more like he's talking about the immediate response, not the war and act....Trump immediately came out and blamed Obama and the Democrats. Bush actually came out and defended certain people while trying to bring everyone together.

Again I don't think he's talking about Bush's entire career after the event...just the few hours at the start of the next morning.

government isn't to blame. Congress has something like 13% approval and over 90% re-election rate of incumbents.

The only way that happens is if people go to the polls and just vote straight Rs or straight Ds without knowing anything about the person.

best solution would be to ban putting political parties on gen election tickets.

Most people don't mind their current congressman; it's congress as a whole they can't stand. I don't think this is reflective blind partisan voting.

These were reactionary measures to 9/11

If you tried to pass it today, you'd have a lot of blowback.

Obama got tons of shit from his own party when he expanded the Patriot Act.

You can't really count what people approve of while they're being bombed and looking at billions of dollars worth of rubble and thousands of dead family/friends as a general ideology.

Like, if you're literally starving to death, you'd probably eat all kinds of shit you think is disgusting, and you'd probably even say it tastes great.

I heard that we didn't want to do a Congressional Declaration of War against Al Qaeda etc. because it would give them some kind of legitimacy and protections under international law if we did. I think that's dumb, we should have just done it anyways and just held up the finger to anyone who complained.

Instead, we used this AUMF that has been used to go after jihadists everywhere from Mauritania to the Philippines.

And we also used an AUMF against Iraq even though we actually were fighting against a nation state in that case where the argument about not using the Congressional Declaration of War doesn't even make sense.

So yeah, we need to go back to those.
