Probably doesnt help that they randomly deleted peoples accounts.

I used to use it a lot ceased after it died out and last year I randomly felt like logging in and my account name just didnt exist anymore.

I'm honestly surprised it even still existed. I used AIM for a while way back when, then I moved to Yahoo, then to MSN Instant Messenger, and then to Skype where I still am now. I also have Discord, though Skype is still my primary chatting platform. Well, that and Steam, but it's not exclusively for talking. :P

They shut that down a year or so ago. Apparently people in the oil industry used it to a high degree.

Anyway, sucks to see it go. I haven't used it since like 2008. I use to enjoy chatting to various animators from Newgrounds and artist from Deviant and sheezy art. Not to mention forums such as this one and the Adult Swim boards back in like 2003. I met a lot of really cool, and interesting people on aim that I lost touch with when social media took over and we all drifted away.

Sucks that the last bastions of old online chat sans IRC is going away. From cutting my teeth in the MSN chat rooms, to aim/yahoo, msn, and skype. I've tried things like discord but its not the same nor as fun.

Still remember the last person I chatted to on aim. It was RikkuSwirls.

Damn, I just got hit with a wave of nostalgia. My friend and I would talk on aim for hours. I even had my first "girlfriend" on AIM. Kind of sad a part of my childhood is officially dying, but that's life.

It's like seeing a story about a celeb dying who you just assumed died ages ago.

Personally, I hadn't really touched it since 2002-2003 maybe so... yeah.

Yahoo Messenger still exists, at least technically. They just forced people to migrate to their new client after redoing the protocol in a way that makes it useless (for example you can't tell if anyone is online). Also ICQ still exists in some form (as far as I'm aware AIM's closure isn't effecting them), there's XMPP (although no one really used it until Google took advantage of it), and a few other older regional chat programs that still exist.

Hm I still use my aol mail. But only for store promotions, online coupons and fantasy sports so it doesn't clutter my work and gmail accounts.

I imagine the mail portion is going away and not just the messenger but I haven't read anything on that. Hopefully not

AOL Mail and is staying. Among other things, Verizon switched all of its internet subscribers from its in-house email system to AOL Mail, so they have reason to keep that going atm.

Last time I used Trillian/AIM was to communicate with nudo when he was running his PotD D&D game about five years ago.

I used to use AIM on its own constantly back in the span from 1998-2004 or so. Always preferred it over ICQ, and it was basically my primary system for talking to people in real time online. I only really stopped using it when I stopped talking to people online in real time entirely.

My AOL email is still my main email account. Been using it since the Christmas of 1995. I see no reason to change it to something else from google or any other service. It does its job.

Anyway, regarding AIM, used it religiously for years until about 2008 or so...that is when I first heard about Facebook at my 10 Year high school reunion.

I remember when AIM first started...it was exclusively on AOL's dial-up service first...it then exploded in popularity on the dial-up service that they rolled it out to everyone who didn't have AOL. When I first started using AIM in...1996? 1997?...I thought it was the greatest invention since...CAR PHONES! :D

I do that now.

Fuck, this is really bad. Not sure what to switch to and how it will all carry over w/ my aim contacts. Don't see some of them for weeks...

AIM is so good... Uses so little internet bandwidth that I literally had it running like a champ while internet was down, using it to get troubleshooting advice from a tech-savvy friend. And it has so many more features than cruddy facebook chat. Could even send large files through it.
Man, the first D&D game I ever ran as DM, I did through AIM chat w/ the aim dice bot... So many great memories.... This sucks :(

Shit, going back even further down memory lane, it was through AIM that I spent months messaging and flirting with the woman I'd eventually start dating and then marry. And now it's dying.
