Comic nerds, what do you think? Seems like insane masochism to be a good SJW on the surface, but who knows. Is this character's race important to the plot or something? Does this mean we can never have a black Batman? Give me your hot take.

This move ups his profile more than the actual role would. I don't really care that whitewashing is done, but in the more egregious cases it lets me know that I can just ignore the movie entirely. Taking those kinds of liberties generally imply the movie will be trash anyway (Exodus).

My hot take is that I don't think a black Batman would work. I think Bruce coming from upper crust white Gotham is an important contrast to demonstrate the creature comforts he's eschewing in his endless quest for justice.

I suppose there could be a black Batman after Bruce that he passes the mantle to. Maybe something there.

Did anyone else have to read a book in school about a black girl that wanted to be Peter pan in the school play? Was that just me?

I don't know what the employment in acting situation is, so I have no opinion, really. Person can do whatever he wants

Without context, I guess it does feel like it could be a moral judgment from him. Is he implying that Idris elba should have stepped down from playing the gunslinger, or is it more about the volume of acting rules available to minorities?

The entire point of Emma Stone's character in Aloha is that she was a quarter Hawaiian/quarter Chinese but didn't look like it at all, which influenced her personality because she had a chip on shoulder. The girl she was based on was a half Chinese/Hawaiian ginger.

Anyway, this is great. Assuming of course that there will be pressure for the black actress portraying Domino (who literally has white clown makeup skin color) to drop out of Deadpool 2. There will be, right?

I thought Elba was a good choice, but them not giving him the blue eyes was a mistake. It was a mechanism used to show he still had hope despite the world crumbling around him and was constantly referenced throughout the books.

Other than that his looks, were pretty irrelevant.

not exactly this, but in school I read a story about a black boy who wanted to be Prince Charming(?) in the school play. he used skin lightening cream for weeks but it was no use, the part went to a lighter-skinned boy. instead the main character got cast as the bad guy.

so, during the play, the main character walked up and punched Prince Charming in the face

it turned into an all-out brawl and he was banned from next year's school play but it was worth it

in terms of the dark tower i didn't read the whole series myself, but finished it via wikipedia. apparently in a later book (spoilers)

he teleports to 1970s new york and people specifically reference and treat him as a honky

but then again

it can always be an alternate dimension or timeline or whatever so who cares really

i just meant to bring up a random example. maybe a better one would be the black norse god in thor, maybe? i dunno. the example could even be another white actor playing a traditionally non white role

I don't think that's a great analogy.

If you don't care about the race of the Donino actress, then you probably don't care about the race of this Hellboy role either, so don't worry about it.

It's like you really want to expose some awful hypocritical double standard but then say you don't care

The Domino analogy is bad because Domino's skin is a result of experimentation done on her as a child. Has nothing to do with her race. In fact I'm fairly certain it's never been shown what her race actually is, because it doesn't matter to the character.

At least with the original example the character's race could potentially matter to the plot!

Domino's thing visually is the striking contrast of the literal white skin and black spots and the movie version is just inverting that it seems.
