As great as this could be in theory, there's no way it will ever hold a candle to the intricacies of SA2B chao garden.

Also, gacha/pay2win stuff. Probably implemented in the form of loot boxes containing chaos drives and animals since the only way to get stat boosts was from the actual stages.

It wouldn't necessarily be pay to win. They could make it so that you earn stat boosts from playing mini games or something, and paying irl money just gets you more chances to play those games.

And that's just if they go the free-to-play route at all (which is admittedly likely). It could just be a one-time purchase, especially if they put the game on other platforms.

No. Pay 2 win gets you advantages over other players by way of spending more. Free to play can just sell cosmetic items to generate revenue and not affect game balance.

TC's suggestion of "paying for more minigames to get stat boosts" is also pay2win, even though you aren't directly purchasing the stat boosts. You are purchasing more chances to get stat boosts, which is what today's mobile games are using to try and avoid the label. They use loot crates and waiting periods because you aren't technically buying any stat boosts.

As much as I'd love to see the Chao Garden come back independently, it really didn't function independently in SA2:B, and I don't know how they could implement the process of gathering stat boosts without either making another full game on top of it where grinding is ostensibly an afterthought (as SA2 did), or making it completely dull by just F2P-ing all over it (trite minigames, loot crates/gachas, waiting periods...). SA2 itself certainly had its share of flaws as its own game, but it really did mesh perfectly with the Chao Garden, and I don't know how else they could strike that balance again.

Just have chao race and karate earn drives, animals, fruit and tools and let you buy rings to buy square, round and normal seeds, tin cans, boxes, apples, knitwear, etc. and maybe the occasional chao fruit.

As time goes on add dlc minigames that let you wager black market items.

Just give the option to take a chao for a walk, or send one out to gather resources. They could gather drives and animals that way, or have them be rewards for certain activities/quests. Heck, could even have the daycare/preschool thing offer lessons that boost stats.

There was always a shop in the chao gardens, so if anything was a paid service it should be that and not the stat changing items. You could earn rings through the mini games and challenges, but also buy them directly. Same for the items, you can either save rings for them which might take a while, or buy them directly. Maybe have special items only available for real cash, like a fruit that doubles stat gains for a certain amount of time, or an item that makes them mature/reincarnate quicker.

What might be fun is if Sega integrated all of their future games with the Chao Garden app, so you'd get drives and the like from playing them. It wouldn't necessarily have to be done as in-game drops, since that'd be hard to do without deviating from the game's style, but the app could award you semi-random ones based on your performance over a given session (discrete levels if the game has them, or some sort of sensible time period). That'd also allow for game-unique Chao accessories and styles, which could be fun.
