What evidence points to Light more than Mia?

The inside knowledge, only someone connected to the police could have access to the databases with the criminals name and faces, and Mia didn't have any police connections.

Oh yeah maybe he was killing Mia... or both

That actually makes it a better ending

Also wasn't he in Mia's room when he found it?

Finally saw it. Wasn't a fan. Almost seemed like a supercut of a miniseries transformed into a movie. Had some good scenes but not enough to balance it out.

Not nearly as awful as some people are claiming.

I tried watching it as its own individual thing. It wasn't terrible if you did that. I had a lot of issues with the movie, and I feel it could have been better, but overall I don't think it's nearly as bad as people are acting like.

Light's acting was super bad though.

Just watched this with two friends, we were dying of laughter pretty much the entire time. Definitely falls into the "so bad it's good" category, I had a blast. (It's a real piece of shit, but it's a delight to see how far - and how fast - it goes completely off the rails.)

So I just finished watching the anime; really good except I didn't like the ending I wanted Light to win! And he was way to smart to fall into the trap that led to his demise. Why not have x-kira test the notebook right before using it, just to make sure.

I honestly have never watched a Japanese anime before and I found it funny how they had Americans speaking Japanese, including the president giving a news conference in Japanese, lol. I suppose we do this all the time in American tv, but seeing it done on the flipside definitely makes it more hilarious and nonsensical.

I noticed Netflix has a lot of anime programming. Anyone have any suggestions on another good anime to watch on Netflix?

The manga explains WAY better how he fell into the trap. The anime rushes it super hard and skips a lot of stuff. Easily the worst thing about the anime.

Also if you're familiar with anime tropes then watch One Punch Man, it is the ultimate satire. If not then watch Gurren Lagann or something. There's other really good animes but they are not on Netflix.

Just saw it. I liked Dafoe as Ryuk and immediately recognized his voice. They didn't really do much with the character, but all he had to do was provide his voice to be decent. Light was laughably bad. Like what the fuck they make him seem like a total dumbass until the very end where they show the one time he could even be called clever in the movie.

Mia was whatever. I just wasn't feeling her acting or Light's. It's kinda weird they kept Light's name the same and made him American. I mean I thought they would've made Light his nickname and given him a full American name because who names their kid Light. Light's dad and Watari were ok. L seemed fine at first and then seemed like he lost all sense of direction in his character. The pie scene was funny.

Overall this was weirdly paced, not explained all that well and mostly full of mediocre at best acting performances. Not the worst thing I've ever seen, but it basically lacked all the Light/L cleverness that made the anime and manga so exciting and intense.

okay i finished the movie

it's really bad in basically every possible way. the writers of this movie basically did not understand the characters they were trying to portray and certainly did not know how to execute them properly.

like the public interview L gives where he announces he coming after Kira is possibly one of my favourite scenes in all of anime, and they did it in this movie. But they completely missed why it was such a great scene. In the anime, L comes on screen and challenges Kira to kill him. Kira obliges and kills him. L reveals this to be a trick and the guy Kira killed was a test to see if he could kill him. L discovers that Kira can kill someone upon first seeing them and learning their name... and also that Kira is in the region that this was broadcasted to since this wasn't sent out worldwide. He announces he will catch Kira, and he challenges Kira to kill him again (with his face hidden and through a voice modulator). When it doesn't happen, he ends the interview.

In the movie, he physically appears and announces he will catch Kira and challenges Kira to kill him. When it doesn't happen, he ends the interview.

The reason this was such a gripping and fun scene was because L actually outwitted Kira. Kira fell right into his trap, and L gained information because of it. He calls Kira out and declares he'll catch him, but that's not the heart of the scene. The movie just does that part and thinks that it's accomplished something. But it doesn't. It's empty. In fact, it's stupid, since L is putting himself at risk for no reason and gains no information by appearing like he does in the movie.

It's okay for an adaptation like this to not accomplish the same things that the original might have... but it needs to accomplish SOMETHING. This just took out the heart of a scene and left it there was a hollow shell. Which basically summarizes everything else this movie did.

Quick character recap:

Dad: He's functional I guess. Performance was not very good, but he worked. If the movie was good he wouldn't have really brought it down.

Watari: Also functional. He wasn't particularly interesting or entertaining, but he served his purpose.

Ryuk: Really cool aesthetic and voice. Personality is a little weird. I enjoyed seeing him in the background at times chuckling at what was happening - that's classic Ryuk.. His first scene in the classroom where he tells Light what to do didn't feel right at all. Ryuk pushing Light into doing anything feels wrong, and then he had a lot of awkward dialogue doing a bunch of exposition right after that first killing. He also keeps trying to tell Light to give up the notebook for some reason... but since Light is actually fucking awful maybe he just wanted out of this movie as much as I did. Ryuk was pretty decent.

L: L was just really bad. I thought he might turn out interesting at first, but despite the show cosntantly trying to make me believe L was clever, he never actually does anything clever. The way he makes connections don't really make sense, and confronting Light halfway through the movie and accusing him of being Kira was dumb as hell. I thought maybe he was trying to corner Light or push him into doing something... but he didnt. He has no plan and even shows his face... and then gets mad when Light targets Watari? This just wasn't L. They did make some attempt at doing his mannerisms which I appreciated, but the camera work just didn't capture it properly so it didn't work.

Light: Light is awful. He doesn't ever actually look like he wants to be doing what they are doing or that he even believes the things they are saying. He's just this annoying fucking kid who gets pushed along by the plot and starts writing names in the book because the movie demands that he does it. He never really understands anything that's going on, and they shoehorned in that scheme at the end to make him seem smart like anime Light, but he's really just as dumb as L is. His romance is really bad.

Mia: I think people might disagree with me here but I actually like Mia. She's the sole possible bright spot in this movie. Unlike the other 5 characters, she is not from the anime. She's certainly not Misa. An original character! She's some girl that Light tells about the Death Note (which was one of his many stupid fucking ideas) and the idea of killing all these bad guys makes her hot, so they fall in love or something. The romance itself is really bad, and for some reason the romance is why they decide to go on a fucking killing spree. This is another reason why Light is so dumb... the whole "LETS BE GOD AND KILL THE BAD GUYS" idea comes out of them being together rather than actual thought or belief that he has. It's really weird.

But as the killing starts going, we see her *actually* thinking about what they are doing and what they can accomplish. What they are doing this for. And when shit starts going bad, she's the one coming up with solutions on how to deal with it (let's kill all the FBI agents tailing everyone, instead of just the one tailing you!) Light is a whiny bitch and not committed to what they are doing so he won't do it, but she steps up. She even comes up with a plan to double cross him!

In my opinion, this girl was a bad bitch and the movie should have ended with her cutting Light out for being weak, and winning over L. That would have made me actually respect this movie a little.

Instead, she get gets caught up in all of the bad writing and has to die for it. A real shame. The only reason this happened is because the writers don't actually realize that they didn't get Light and L right, and think that they have to push those two into being the spotlight. I guess they just weren't self aware enough to realize what they had in front of them.

This movie really shouldn't have been about Light. This should have just been about some other kid who gets the Death Note and tries using it. It's completely conceivable in the Death Note for this to happen. It can even still be Ryuk! Instead, they tied themselves to a story that they just didn't know how to tell...

I think even if they did try to tell an original story, it still would have been bad, since everything in this movie is incompetent. It's not just that they didn't get the characters or scenes right. They just don't know how to write or direct. But still, an original story might have been worth some respect. This was absolute garbage.

RIP Mia.

Only one thing still bothers me, though it could have easily been written away

He shouldn't have been able to just write "oh, and the page with my name falls in some fire" and have it actually work. But he could have written that "Person X finds the page and burns it and then dies" and it would have worked so whatever

there were a lot of tiny plot holes and really dumb things that the writing staff seemed to overlook.

like after mia tells light that his name is in the death note he goes and retrieves the death note.

why didn't he just immediately burn that page right then and there????

also it seems like while we drew a lot of the same conclusions your overall impression was far more negative than mine.

I think the arguments that it was bad because the characters were different is a poor one. It was trying to be its own thing. The comparisons to the source are worthless.

The movie was just bad in its own merits in a vacuum, not because "Not MY Kira!"

I'm not mad that he was emotional.... That could actually work. But he tells Light that he knows he's Kira exactly halfway through the movie with no plan of what he's going to do to catch him, or any plan in place to protect himself or Watari from whatever Kira can do. Then, because they've done no safeguards to protect Watari despite having a decent idea of what Kira needs to kill someone, Light predictably just goes after Watari.... and L gets mad like Light just stole his lunch money or something. Like of course Light killed Watari, did you forget this guy is a mass murderer?

Then L spends the second half of the movie practically in a haze of hate accomplishing nothing. The fact that he even searches the room at the end and finds a page doesn't make much sense... they just did it to set up the final scene they wanted of L potentially writing Light's name down.

If at any point it felt like Light had outwitted L to get ahold of Watari, or L had a plan in place to outwit Light that maybe didn't go well, this all could have been fine.... but there's none of that. This all just happens for no reason.

Also, I think if Watari had been killed in the anime a while before L got killed, L would have been pretty emotional about it. You can hear the falter in L's voice when he realizes somethings happened to Watari there.... but then he dies right after too. I doubt he woulda gone on a rampage like this movie L but he woulda made it personal for sure.

How the fuck did the Death Note even work on Watari in the first place, by the way? Like, first of all, Watari is supposed to be an alias to begin with. Second of all, he didn't have the last name. Like, if the note worked on Watari it'd make as much sense for it to work on L. Especially since L is actually his first name in the manga, "lol."

The whole thing just feels like something the writers want to hand-wave so they could have this plot of L going nuts.
