yea it's total shit that it's a movie instead of a series. Soon as I found out it was a movie I lost all interest. plus I also heard that in one of the trailers, Light refers to himself and Misa as the villains. he would never do that. he thinks he is God

Just watched it. It was interesting, but the acting was pretty horrendous at points.
Also, Ryuk says at one point that no one has written more than 2 letters of his name, but there was a warning in the book someone had written saying not to trust Ryuk. It also was strange that was the only time that thought was entertained. Oh well.

Light was really dumb too. After all the time he spent controlling people, he thought he could talk someone out of what he was controlling them to do...

It is quite decent for what it is. The first half is a decent adaptation of the characters, the second half tries too much to be Hollywood.

I don't know if I'd call it decent. Maybe 'watchable' would be better.

A short list of things that pissed me off, off the top of my head:
-Light is portrayed as overly emotional and constantly gets played by both the Mia character and Ryuk. He only has one gambit that pays off, and it's still implied he ultimately failed that one too.
-Light is shown to be a cheater and is immediately more of a morally grey character in the movie, rather than a bored model student who develops a god complex when given the power to kill anyone
-Ryuk has to talk him into using the death note, and all the rules are written in there already. There is no experimentation done to find out the limitations of the notebook's power
-Light is portrayed as relatively stupid, to the point where he is reading the fucking book in plain view of his classmates without covering it at all.
-Light willingly shows the Mia character the notebook, and their romance is not depicted as one-sided, leading to some stupid plot points
-While I was reasonably satisfied with the L actor's performance, I was far less so with the depiction of L
-Honestly, while I despise the obvious Misa parallel to the Mia character, she seemed better suited to handle the situation, and was depicted as more cunning, sociopathic, and ruthless.


I'm sure there's more, this is just a quick list. The movie needed another 45 minutes at least and far more tension between L and Light.

I had assumed that they were trying to imply his name wasn't actually spelled "Ryuk" but phonetically that was close enough.

So 'Ryuk' would give you an idea of how to pronounce his name but wouldn't kill him if you wrote it in the notebook. Honestly, I don't know why they didn't just have him say you can't kill Shinigami with a Death Note, like in the source material, but whatever.
