I kiiiinda understand the whole "issue" about Michael b Jordan playing Johnny storm in that fantastic four movie. The invisible woman was still white, and the Johnny and Susan (that's her name right) are siblings. They kinda changed a small insignificant part of their back stories. If Susan was also black, that would make sense.

Because diversity for the sake of diversity? idk, given that "L" was an orphan with no strong ethnic connections, I'm probably less bothered by this than other choices. I'm more concerned by the fact that neither Light nor "L" can act.

From what I saw he looks like he's playing a completely different character from L

But that's true for Light as well

It's just not a good adaptation, but I don't think the actor's skin colour has anything to do with it.

It's kinda typical with these adaptations. And no matter where it's set you have some leeway with "L" because he's portrayed as a foreigner (despite looking pretty Asian in the manga, etc).

Because that's pretty much always the reason. As for his qualifications as an actor, I already noted NEITHER one can act. Clearly it wasn't a matter of going with the best choice, since you if you wanted a black actor you could grab any black man off the street, hand him a script, and he'd probably do better.

It's shallow to shoehorn actors in to inappropriate roles to appease lunatics. When you're redoing a series to piggyback on its success, you don't change every fucking thing you can unless you want it to fall flat on its face.

It's shallow to shoehorn actors in to inappropriate roles to appease lunatics. When you're redoing a series to piggyback on its success, you don't change every fucking thing you can unless you want it to fall flat on its face.

Its only a shoehorn if the goal was to create a replica of the manga with live action. It was not. It is an adaption and they have creative freedom to interpret and re-interpret the source. Your argument is therefore invalid.

While I'm sure Gregory Peck, for instance, might be superior to women for playing Queen Elizabeth I or to blacks for playing MLK Jr, it would still look ridiculous because you're casting against the character. More importantly, the actor you're defending clearly wasn't chosen for his acting ability.

Yeah, if it's an improvement, people will generally come to accept it, like how Nick Fury is Samuel L. Jackson now in the main timeline, or whatever you want to call it. Sometimes mixing it up adds something, these days it's mostly "let's be progressive and make sure to check off all the diversity boxes!" There's a reason nobody ever took the BK Kids Club very seriously :P
