is fortnite the biggest retail game rip off in 2017?

i ask because everything about this game screams "trap" the game's been in development since 2011 and yet what everyone's buying now is an early access version of the game which will be free to play when it officially launches next year

i got it because i was intrigued by the fort building defense concept combined with fending off zombies with 3 other players(much like left 4 dead)and thought maybe this could be the zombie co-op game i had been waiting for

sadly that wasn't the case and even playing with friends it becomes clear that the game is one big money pit where they lure you in with a bunch of freebies but after that you are stuck playing by the game's crooked rules

the game doesn't reward you for all the time you put into it doesn't reward you for playing the hell out of a certain character or using a certain weapon all the time

it rewards you on a very strict basis....mission by mission and with daily quests

it acts like a smartphone game in the way it expects you to play it a little everyday instead of putting in tons of hours on it

I'd say it's far worse because at least street fighter 5 doesn't slap you in the face with a paywall that makes gameplay crap tastic

fortnite's microtransactions have a big effect on the gameplay in a negative way

so much so that fortnite actually has it's own built-in streaming feature that hands out special content to anyone who uses their twitch account to stream the game

they want people to tout about this craphole of a game so more people might buy into it and continue the cycle

Well the $40 entry fee is only during the Early Access, it will actually be free once the game is released.

Sounds like it is still essentially a standard mobile game freemium model though.

the red flag here is that if someone saw this at a store like walmart target gamestop or bestbuy there is no indication anywhere that this is just a beta an unfinished project that's in early access mode

where i got this game(walmart)they had signs and displays promoting it as the next great game you gotta pick up and nowhere anywhere did it say "this is just an early access copy"

and they don't even give you the option of buying the base $40 version at retail it's the deluxe $59.99 version for consoles

for something that'd going free to play next year that's outrageous

I'm posting this so people don't make the same mistake i did and purchase this game

I didn't even know they were selling physical copies. That is definitely on the shady side to sell what is effectively a beta of a F2P game in stores at normal retail game pricing.

nowhere on the box does it say early access either...so unless you already knew about this game before hand and what it was selling to you

You'd probably just see it and be like "Huh? a 4 player online co-op game where i can kill zombies and build fortresses that have death traps set up to kill them all while chilling with 3 other friends? man sign me up

then You'd buy it and see what a money pit it is....they actually have a legendary edition that sells for $149.99

i kid you not and when you buy that one in game as an upgrade another option appears one that only shows up after You've purchased the most expensive bundle they have and you have to spend another $100 to get it

at that rate You've spent $250 on a game that'll be Free next year

It's in early access and just had it's first public launch, give it a chance to change. I'm ridiculously cynical and pessimistic but I'm being optimistic about this game, besides they said they're working on fixes for things like this. I'm extremlky dissapointed by this game too but I'll give it a few months or maybe till release to completely judge it.

i have this case right here and nowhere does it say early access unless it's in small fine print that always grabs you by the balls(i can post a picture of the case myself if you don't believe me)

and yes i know it's early access but no competent game developer wants their customer to play the game as little as possible and then log off

there's no incentive to doing more than just the daily quests if you do more than that you end up repeating the same set of missions again and again

and the more you play the more you notice the free to play elements that come off as obnoxious

after your 24 daily Llama's run out You'll be struggling to get more than 1 Llama Pinata every couple of days and You'll be pressured to buy v-bucks to get more loot

how the hell is that tolerable?

keep saying early access all you want but when this game is being sold at retailers for what's basically a $59.99 beta pass on Xbox One/PS4

it starts seeming more and more like the developers just wanted to charge the players for bug testing something that many thought was already a full game

this is literally not a new thing for free to play games

stop fucking bitching, no one told you to buy the game, no one told you to do no research, go return it if it's that big of a deal.

Yea my friend showed me this game. The way it was advertised it sounded too good to be true so I decided not to get it. My friend got it though and within a couple hours it seemed like he had exhausted all there was to actually do in the game, and it was all some big loop. Protect this thing for a certain amount of time, and beat the level. While doing tiny objectives within that level to up your score. Then level up your weapons and then open up loot boxes x1000 until you get something good. And repeat. And buy loot boxes if you get impatient.
Not my cup of tea.
Just seems like it was designed to milk money out of the players through microtransactions. Not like it would be the first game doing that though. <.<

what the hell have they been doing

developing.

they announced the game three weeks after they came up with the idea for it.

that trailer in 2011 is the ONLY thing they had done. it initially started as a game jam game.

it had its first alpha in 2014, and then again in 2015. in 2017 it entered paid early access, with its full release to be in 2018 as free to play. incidentally, they've been saying since 2014 that it's going to be free to play.

it's being made by people can fly, not epic.

so, all in all, it's development time is completely understandable.

again, return the game if you don't like it. this game has not been secretive about what it's about in the least.

My issue with Fortnite is the fact you are literally paying, for a Closed Beta of a free to play game.....

This is not good business practice AT ALL. Come test our game for us, but you have to give us money to test our game for us! Oh by the way, when we release it, it will be free!

Makes Activision look good to be honest.

(Before anyone says but it is early access not a closed beta, when you load it up in big writing in a big yellow box in the corner is says CLOSED BETA)

yes let's not scold the developers for chucking out an unfinished product and touting it as a full game with most retailers setting up little displays to promote it as the hot new game you gotta buy

i admit my mistake but considering there's people dumping thousands of dollars into the microtransaction side of this I'm guessing restraint is just not non-existent in gamers

since this game's been in development since 2011 i guess the developers decided with gamers being this stupid they could ship out a case filled with poop and people would still throw money at it

and that's what happened

they shipped out a smoldering turd and more than enough people came to take a bite so epic games can say this was a success

If you bothered to follow this game's development, or did five minutes of research before buying it, you would've known it was free-to-play.

I might pay $5 or maybe $10 for early access, but $40?! Fuck that noise.

free to play in another dimension maybe(the same dimension where paragon became free to play)

every single person playing the game has had to pay 40 bucks or more because epic doesn't even know when the game's coming out and they just shoved this out there to make a quick buck(if this game needs more than six years to be finished it's not worth it....project started in 2011 and it's still not done)

but yeah go ahead blame the people who bought it never blame the greedy developers who thought making a video game with smartphone style microtransaction and extremely restrictive gameplay would be the next great best seller

I'm sure You've never bought a crappy game before that you wish you had never even touched because it's unrealistic to think every single game You've ever purchased has been a wise choice

we all make mistakes it's with those mistakes we learn to avoid making them again and this topic is to keep people from making the same mistake i made and telling everyone on here to avoid fortnite like the plague

unless you like eating dog turds this isn't fun for anybody not even with friends if anything it's more frustrating with friends because you have to make them suffer through missions that last longer than they should and come with the most repetitive gameplay on earth

Way to pivot off-topic. You're bitching about how you wasted $40 on a free game, not about Paragon. Remember?

free to play in another dimension maybe

If by "another dimension" you mean 2018 (or whenever the official release ends up being)

I'm sure You've never bought a crappy game before that you wish you had never even touched

I have bought games I regret, but I'm an adult who takes responsibility for his actions. I don't blame developers for my purchase. Yeah, they made a shit game, but I'm the one who bought it.

paragon and fortnite are made by the same damn people....paragon was a early access game you had to buy that would have a free to play version later....that never came

same case applies to fortnite a free version doesn't exist right now and epic themselves doesn't have a release date outside "2018 maybe?"

so if things go as planned then fortnite's free to play launch will never exist and It'll be stuck in early access forever

but hey whatever i guess You'd prefer if people didn't know about this crap and wasted more money on a game that's just gonna be abanoned when epic takes the money and runs

you keep saying i should blame myself and be upset with myself only I've already beat myself up every day since buying this crap...outside of smashing my head into a wall there's not much more i can do

i want bad games to die...to be exposed for the filth they are and just go away

You could've just made a topic that said "Heads up, everyone. Epic is charging full price for a free game that is, in my opinion, not very fun to play"

But what you did was make a topic whining that the game is a ripoff, claiming the developer is at fault for your failure to do any research on the game before you decided to throw $40 at it.

Go ahead and try to spin your message now that you're trying to help everyone else avoid your mistake, but that's not why you made this topic. You made this topic trying to point fingers at anyone but yourself, when you are solely responsible for what you choose to spend money on.
