I think Valve are making more money not releasing games than they ever did releasing them.

I worry (not actually though) that too many digital card games will thin out the audience too much. Unlike other genres, these can be a pretty big time sink and I wonder who, with so many options available, can afford to spend time in more than one or two of these at a time? I play Pokemon TCGO (admittedly super casually) and have trouble getting all the weekly prizes and stuff. I can't imagine being able to dedicate enough time to play another game of the same kind alongside it.

I mean the way they described the game it actually sounds pretty interesting. They're trying to capture the spirit of playing Dota in a card game so you get gold and can put items on your heroes and stuff like that. I believe they also said there's a 3 lane system so I'll certainly give it a look when it comes out.

Do you follow the TCG scene? How do you even know that it's still the same? I'd say that the vast majority of people who got into it way back when it started stopped following it after a year if that. Yet it's still around even to this day.

So how does it have a TCG following any different than those TCGs that have a following like Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, Cardfight!! Vanguard, or Weiss Schwarz?

yeah, reading up on it sounds kinda neat, and this is coming from someone who 1. upon hearing this announcement thought "oh, of course Valve are making a Hearthstone" 2. doesn't care about TCGs and 3. doesn't care about Dota 2.

- There are three game boards that represent the lanes
- You control 5 heroes, just like DotA
- You can equip item cards on to the Heroes that you buy with gold
- There are creeps that spawn every turn
- You can play creature cards
- Some cards are cast on the lane and have persistent effects on that lane
- Each Hero has abilities like their DotA counterparts ("You can cast track on a Hero as Bounty Hunter and get extra Gold")

this is early information but I feel like it's enough to differentiate it from the crowd.

It doesn't. How does that have to do with anything with what i said. Pokemon was barely played as a TCG when it first came out though. It was mostly people just trading their cards and never actually playing the game, treating it more or less just like the gameboy game.

Its still around because Pokemon in general focuses on taking advantage of the OCD in gamers more than just about any other game, including other JRPGs. The game's core mechanic fuels the card game still being around, don't think it doesnt.

Not for me. If anything, the Pokemon TCG goes out of its way to make it impossible to get all of the cards. Even getting every variation of a single set is difficult.

Which is actually kind of relaxing, as I can just focus on building decks with the cards I do have.

If this was ever true, it didn't stay that way for long. Pokemon year after year has been one of the too TCGs in terms of actual players, not just people collecting cards.

How pokemon has a shit participation rate in the game vs buying the cards? I mean sure people play the card game. If enough people buy the cards, people will play the card game. It still doesnt mean that most people play the game, and that most just buy booster packs and put them in their sleeves.

I know the Pokemon Company constantly shows off their TCG tournaments, so there's definitely a scene for that.

Showing tournaments means its more popular than the collecting aspect?

I mean there are plenty of youtube videos and subreddits for people just showing off their collections under that same logic. Maybe not pokemon company hosted, but its kinda absurd to think they would have conventions where people just set up their collections for people to marvel at. Or do they?

I know that everyone in my school collected the cards.
Nobody wanted to actually play the game though.
Sure people may have tinkered once or twice, but that was all really (Kind of was like pogs)
This was like 1998-2000

Then it seemed everyone moved on to MTG and actually played that game

Having played competitive Pokemon TCG for over 10 years, I can vouch for the fact that it's still incredibly popular.
