WTF! I was fighting the boss of Beast's Castle and got killed, but when I hit retry and I played as Mickey while Sora is dead on the ground lol, then Mickey died and I got Sora back again. It was hella weird and fast >_>

Yeah that happens occasionally with boss battles only I believe. I had Mickey pop up during the same boss but finished him off.

That's where most people first get Mickey funnily enough.

That boss was a big spike in difficulty. His attack pattern and how to avoid it isn't overly obvious.

To answer an earlier question if you go into anti form just go to the colosseum and enter the Cerberus cup and exit right away. Full drive gauge again.

And to keep your drive gauge full there are a couple of other tricks you can use. If you can manage to find a save point before drive form runs out you can exit and re-enter to refill it fully.

Another thing you can do is go to an area that the party disbanded and are all wandering around the map. It has the same effect.

It's not the strength that's the issue. There's weird limits on it, they fundamentally changed how several spells worked, and it's just annoying to deal with IMO.

The only actual changed spells were Fire and Cure yeah? Fire makes it more of a crowd control type deal, while they nerfed Cure cause it was ridiculously strong in KH1. I will admit I often didn't use magic too much, but once I got used to the battle system I found ways to incorporate it in my combos, rather than just using magic. But I suppose I kind of understand

I think part of why those changes annoyed me so much is because I very much go full magic in most games, especially in KH. I loved how KH handled magic and wish more games did it like that, and the fact that the next game in the same series fucked with a system I thought was pretty damn great was enough to turn me off from it.

Well it's just kinda weird cause I feel like it's somewhat easier to go full Magic, since it actually recharges.

Also it being "easier" doesn't make it a better designed system.

There are ways around it. You can use your MP and go into one of the different forms to recharge your MP. You can use physical strikes and pop an Ether to replenish your MP. I rather do that than get hit by enemies.

I like the give and take of KH1's system though.

You run out of magic, so you have to rush in and attack, try to regain enough magic so you can use Aeroga or at least a cure if you're really low, then you take a big hit from the boss, but it gives you enough magic back to not only heal, but maybe throw back a couple high damage spells at him.

Magic just felt more high stakes and involved in 1 for me.

A little tidbit, that fight played out in a cutscene in the original KH2 and they added it as an actual battle in Final Mix

You can now get final form if you want by wearing that keyboard and using drive forms.

Oh man, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this topic. So awesome to get the perspective of someone who's new to the series.

Awesome to see that you ended up really enjoying KH1. I loved its approach to the Disney worlds; how they didn't just recycle the movie plots and Sora, Donald, and Goofy actually had an effect on things. Combat was a little barebones, especially on the physical side. Magic was really fun, though. I would basically use magic until it got pretty much useless after Hollow Bastion, at which point I'd most just spam Strike Raid, Ars Arcanum, etc.

I share your sentiments with Chain of Memories. You lasted longer than I did when I tried to play it, though. Fuck that card battle system and the game's recycled, soulless KH1 worlds.

KH2 has probably the best combat in the series, imo. Once you get a lot of the physical abilities unlocked and learn to string them together...Oof. Quite possibly the most fun I've had with a combat system in an RPG. I do dislike how the Disney worlds have you just running through the movie plots, and your presence never really has an impact on anything (with few exceptions).

BBS is quite possibly my favorite game in the series overall. It's a bit different because of how the game is set up, and initially that can leave some of the worlds feeling a bit shallow, but by the end, they do feel pretty fleshed out. Some of the voice acting and dialogue can be cringey, but I still enjoyed the characters more than the other protagonists for the most part and I quite enjoyed the story. And the combat system is really fun too. Maybe not quite up to 2's level, but the command system works well and I really enjoyed several different aspects of it.

I have mixed feelings about Days. The characters are more fleshed out than probably any other game in the series, that's true. But the story does come across like bad fan-fiction in a lot of respects, and ultimately it just kinda felt meaningless. And like the writers just thought to themselves, 'Hmm, we really need a story about Roxas during his time in the Org, but it can't have any actual implications on the story. How do we pull that? Oh, I got it! *insert ending*

But yeah, really looking forward to reading about your playthrough of BBS, TC.

I found that just attacking him regularly works well enough, other than the game you're forced to do at the end of the fight.

I beat the first Xenmas fight and reached the final save point but got called into work early after that, so the final boss will have to wait >_>

Also Riku looks cool in his new outfit. i don't get the whole "look like Ansem from too much darkness" thing. It sounds like bad fanfic imo >_> but oh well. Also his belly button being exposed looks weird on a dude but whatever lol
