The XP is fixed (5 iirc) and you also get TP from parrying his attacks which is an additional XP. But that's why I just go for the Shadows. You don't get much XP from each of them on their own, but there are more in quantity and you still have opportunities for TP.

It might still be faster to fight Riku since you don't have to wander around.

Probably not. The length of Riku's fight varies too much, and it can sometimes be too long and too tedious (especially when you first fight him). Plus he can knock you out in like two hits on Crit mode. The heartless can be often be defeated in a single combo, and sometimes more than one at a time (especially once you start unlocking abilities). There's not too much wandering since heartless are pretty much everywhere, and worst case scenario you just enter the cabin then exit and they all respawn. After you get Sliding Dash or Ripple Drive you can finish off groups of them in a handful of seconds. They're also just easier in general.

Plus you also get free potions from the heartless you defeat.

I have a problem, so I looked at all the bosses on the wiki. Hades and Sephiroth both have 1800 HP whileRock Titan has 2100.

You can definitely do the cups before you finish the game though.

And KH1 doesn't have damage limits IIRC, so leveling high enough will eventually make every fight a cake walk.

Yep, seems like it has to be a physical attack though so I always bring Strike Raid to the Seph battle. And Second Chance as a backup, of course.

And KH1 doesn't have damage limits IIRC, so leveling high enough will eventually make every fight a cake walk.

I mean, it technically would since any computer/program is going to have a number it can't exceed but I'm guessing that limit is too high to matter. The highest I ever raised my attack was until I could kill a 240XP defender in one combo.

Also, curious, if you level up to level 100 on DI, do the bonus levels you get from bosses level you up past 100?

Chain of Memories is... different. I don't think it's a terrible game, and the card system can be fun once you get a feel for it. Just be ready for a different kind of gameplay.

Kurt Zisa is probably the easiest super boss not counting Ice Titan. You can pop a summon with Tinkerbell at the beginning of the fight if you're fast enough and that helps tremendously.

Sephiroth just takes practice. Once you learn his pattern he's really not too bad. It just takes a few tries.

CoM probably has one of my favorite battle systems late game.

Boss fights are some of the funnest imo. But that's only if you know what you're doing - either by looking it up or being willing to experiment with the deck.

I will say the game is NOT fun if you just spam physical attacks. It takes forever to kill anything. Now this post won't make much sense until you're done with the tutorial, but it will help you enjoy the game a lot more.

First, make sure you invest in CP. An easy way to progress is 1 HP - 2CP, and pick up a sleight at every opportunity.

The best way to construct your deck is in sets of three which allow for special moves, putting premium cards at the beginning of sets of three, and using items to keep your deck full. Initially it may seem item cards cost too much CP to be useful, but you don't need very many of them (1 early game to 3 max late game), and you can use them as premium cards. If you don't have any high level item cards for a while, or don't want to spend that much CP on item cards, you can use a low level item card and stack two high level kingdom keys under it to avoid getting it canceled.

Stack a couple 0 cards at the beginning of the deck for boss fights so you can clear any devastating combos. Just skip over them at the beginning of the fight, and don't worry about the card's stats. Just load up on Kingdom Keys. Also the most useful survival enemy cards are given by bosses, but there are a few enemy cards which, if farmed, can make very strong gimmick decks and reload buffs.

You're only ever introduced to a few sleights at a time as you get new cards, and there's a lot of monotony if you're just trudging through the game in empty rooms without thinking about your deck. Use random encounters to learn what different sleights are and which are useful for bosses and which are useful for mobs. Once you get a bit into the game, I would recommend you make two decks: one for mobs and one for bosses. It'll make mobbing go way faster, and grinding will be much less of a chore. Plus, it helps to change your boss deck to adapt to the fight - a much less annoying process if you have a separate boss deck.

I will say I don't think I enjoyed my first playthrough of CoM on the GBA. But I gave it a chance later and actually focused on the deck building aspect and it made it a lot more fun. While you can beat the game with a garbage deck, it's very difficult to have fun doing so, and it's a whole lot of fun with deck building in mind.

For a simple play through, I wouldn't bother farming enemy cards since most of the best ones are given by bosses. But, if you are interested, here are the best enemy cards from random drops (imo):

Air Soldier: allows you to reload while moving for 3 reloads.
Barrel Spider: gives you instant reload for 3 reloads.
Air Pirate: Item cards are unbreakable for 3 reloads.
Creeper Plant: Leaf Bracer - can come in handy sometimes.
Powerwild: "reverses" card values, so 1 goes to 9. Very good for gimmick decks where you want a lot of high level cards with low cost.

Of these the easiest to farm is by far the Barrel Spider, but Air Soldier is probably my favorite random enemy card and I've gotten it without farming almost every playthrough.

A couple clarifications:

Jabodie posted...
item cards cost too much CP to be useful, but you don't need very many of them (1 early game to 3 max late game)

This is assuming you have a deck which can finish a battle within a couple reloads (ie reasonably well made), so you don't need to reload a ton of times to finish fights. If you have a good deck you can usually finish battles just with item cards and no reloads.

Jabodie posted...
don't worry about the card's stats. Just load up on Kingdom Keys.

This is ONLY for 0 cards, since their sole purpose is for boss sleight canceling. Any cards you put in for regular physical combos, the stats do matter. Also keep in mind the stats are different for where they are in the combo.

Jabodie posted...
Plus, it helps to change your boss deck to adapt to the fight - a much less annoying process if you have a separate boss deck.

If you're having trouble with a boss, changing your deck is usually the best approach.

Jabodie posted...
Powerwild: "reverses" card values, so 1 goes to 9. Very good for gimmick decks where you want a lot of high level cards with low cost.

This lasts for one reload. But with the low cost of low CP cards, you can really stack your deck plus use item cards to refill, so odds are you won't need to reload.

It's still not for everybody, I think. But I had issues enjoying the game on my first playthrough of the GBA and PS2 releases like many others. But after looking some stuff up and really focusing on the deck building aspect, it made the game way more fun for me.

The other KH games are much more simple to enjoy. BBS took the deckbulding and simplified sleights into commands with cooldown. In fact, I believe the devs said the command system was inspired by the CoM combat system. However, they simplified it so it was more approachable and more easily enjoyed by the people who played it (which is good and more in line with the series).

One thing about Re:CoM is that sleights are a lot more powerful than in the original IIRC, and definitely a lot more powerful than commands in later games. You can get more OP in Re:CoM than you can in any other KH at the highest difficulty thanks to higher and higher CP as you level.

And I didn't do the s*** with Riku in the basement or whatever at all.

Riku is definitely a bit of a slog since you can't customize your deck + you don't have magic cards. And there is only one friend card: Mickey.

Riku's playstyle basically focuses on learning the deck and enemies in each world so you can reliably card break into dark mode. After that, your deck reloads automatically and it's generally set up to string sleights together. He only has a few sleights, but the ones he does have are pretty fun and very effective.

Plus his raw combo DPS is huge once he hits dark mode.

Re:CoM adds a nice mechanic where same number cards result in a card duel, where you have to break several enemy cards in a row, and lets you do a special move if you pull it off. Overall, I think it's fun, but grinding to 99 takes way longer and, generally speaking, it's a bit harder since you're stuck with your deck.

The thing is that traversing the maps is even more barebones than Sora. Although they are usually smaller maps, there are no cutscenes at all in almost all the Disney worlds, with cutscenes almost exclusively happening in the staircases between. It's very much an "extra mode" kind of vibe.
