No, you just have to beat each character's story. Also make sure you put them each on a separate save file

To expand, the actual ending isn't unlockable at all on Beginner, and in Standard you'd have to complete the Reports. But in Proud and Critical, just beating the main story is all you need.

Last boss for Terra: Used 3 or 4 shot locks and still struggled. Dying a dozen times at least.

Still trucking along on Critical?

Honestly, for BBS, I think Proud is just a more fun experience. The only difference is that you do half damage in Critical IIRC, so once you have a couple cures the fights are basically the same loops except they take twice as long.

I also think that BBS might have the hardest main story bosses in the series. The final bosses of 3D might be harder though.

Edit: However, I still think Critical/Proud is a much more engaging way to play KH. On Standard it's pretty brain dead, which is fine. Sometimes I'll do a Standard playthrough just for fun.

One little fun thing about re:coded: you could actually change the difficulty at any time, but the quality of drops would change depending on which one you were in.

I mean, technically Braig and Xigbar are the same person, no? It's just that when he becomes Xigbar he no longer has a heart. But he's still the same guy with all his memories intact as far as I can tell.

I find the entire concept of Nobodies to be incredibly stupid and their introduction was where the plot of this series truly started to go off the rails.

Yeah, with some exceptions, a Nobody is just a direct continuation of their human state. So Xigbar and Braig are the same person - he's basically just going under a codename, or an alibi.

But Nobodies like Roxas, who exist simultaneously with their human counterparts and live their own lives, are considered Special Nobodies and aren't considered the same person.

For example though: Xemnas is closer to the original Xehanort than Ansem SoD was. Xemnas was just Xehanort's soulless body getting back up again while Ansem was a separate entity altogether as he was a Heartless.

Really we see it in all of the Org members who each have distinct personalities and feelings toward one another. KH2 tries to tell us that, no they're just pretending to have emotions, but that literally makes no fucking sense. You mean to tell me that Demyx being an apathetic coward is an act? That Larxene being a sadist is completely non-genuine? The truth is that Nomura makes this shit up as he goes.

^^^^I'm not going to comment on that since it delves into spoilers for TC, but I will say it's one of the things that Nomura definitely didn't make up as he went along. Especially since it's something Axel talked about in KH2 itself.

But yeah, Roxas, Namine and Xemnas are all Special Nobodies, because they all exist while their counterparts exist.

Most of this information is in the Ansem Reports you collect. So if you haven't been reading them, I suggest you do. Especially since the HD versions add in extra info and fix typos that were in the PS2 versions.

Which I am convinced was a quick little retcon by Nomura when he realized how stupid the concept of "emotionless characters with distinct emotions" was, especially since that aspect of KH2's plot was heavily criticized

They explain this in DDD. Xemnas tells Sora that he lied to all of Org XIII because them experiencing emotions and regrowing their hearts would have interfered with his (Xehanort's) plans, as Xehanort wanted to make them all vessels for his own heart. This explains the emotions we see in Axel and others.

Also, in regards to Roxas, he's even more of an exception to this considering that I'm pretty sure it's strongly implied that he has Ventus's heart. Hence the whole appearance thing and Roxas experiencing emotions like right off the bat, pretty much. I don't think this has ever been confirmed, though; only that his appearance is due to Ventus's heart being within Sora's.

If it wasn't already touched upon in KH2, I'd agree. But like I said, this is one of the few things that Nomura actually did foreshadow and build-up. Axel had a talk with Roxas about this in KH2FM, wondering if they all actually did have hearts the whole time. And Days touched on how Xemnas was lying to everyone anyway. So the reveal in DDD was less a retcon and more of a "Finally!"-type moment. For me anyway.
