I go to CollegeHumor more often (if you include Dorkly with that, which I do) but I like Cracked more

CH and Dorkly are just easier to take in in small doses while at work but Cracked's content is usually more intelligent and well written

College Humor is more consistent in quality, but when Cracked has a hit, it hits hard. Cracked also has more variety in its articles.

As someone who drafted an article for them before (not accepted) based on some of your past topics, I've felt similarly and haven't really figured out why. Could you elaborate?

I don't go to either much anymore, but I've been on a big classic CollegeHumor kick the past few weeks, need to watch Adam Ruins Everything, and recently found out the original co-creator of CollegeHumor also made Chopped which is the most watchable show in the universe.

For those reasons, I had to chop Cracked.

I think a lot of it involves simply how the internet -and what gets views on the net- have changed. The way any modern site measures success is via unique visitors. If you read every article Cracked posts each day you are roughly as valuable as the guy who clicks one Facebook link, reads one example and never comes back.

The problem this leads to is that the content that makes people read each day and the content that makes that one Facebook user click are different. Notably those things include political commentary, sex articles, pseudoscience, and a few other topics. If you look back to the "golden" days of Cracked, the topics written about seemed more focused of being funny and entertaining, and less on "engaging viewers".

Also, the guy who runs the place, David Wong, has slowly but surely grown more liberal, and that shows in the content on the site. For some reason the site runners completely deny their liberal slant ("All opionions are political!") but it's pretty obvious to me and most everyone else that the site is pushing a serious agenda these days. I don't think it's a coincidence that the Facebook market they're trying to entice is primarily Democrat.

This response feels a little rambly, and to be honest I can't quite put my finger on what's changed that I don't like. I guess it's mostly that I laugh a lot less and am annoyed a lot more.

Thanks for the analysis. I see a lot of what you mean about the clickbaity stuff. Politically, I guess all I remember they had was some article trying to better understand the struggles of many Trump-voters that as a Southerner I appreciated, even though I disagree with these people politically. I haven't followed them close enough to remember other political articles they've done recently.

cracked has gone from kind of funny to super preachy in the past couple years.

That prechy shit comes strait from David Wong. I read all of David's forum comments, which is basically his daily blog.

The best way I can describe David is that he's the smartest person I've ever known, and yet he still thinks he is ten times smarter than he is.

Also the guy has a pathological hatred of teenagers. I swear to God that every time David dislikes or disagrees with someone he accused then of being 16.

College Humor videos are funnier and better acted and edited.

I used to visit Cracked daily, now just every now and then if their listicles show up on my FB feed. Also, despite people's prejudices Cracked listicles are still fairly well-researched than other random sites (at least they have citations and links so you can crosscheck them).

On the Cracked writers forum they give bonuses to the top 10 articles. Like five years ago you had to have over 1.2 million uniques to make it.

Now 300,000 is the top.

What happened is that sites like Google and FB cracked (heh) down on clickbait thanks to all those dogshit sites like Upworthy that are now making you angry thinking about them. The major change was that number of clicks was de-emphasized and instead length of time on the page was made more important.

More specifically, the sites made it highly punishable whenever a user clicked a link but then immediately left the page, as that meant they were not being given what they wanted. You can see how this could fight clickbait as all the "You'll never believe what this twelve year old said to his rude teacher!" bullshit is usually not read all the way through.

For one reason or another, Cracked got swept up in this ban, and their numbers crashed overnight. I think they may have been punished for being owned by E-How. You may remember E-How for being complete trash and going bankrupt once Google essentially blocked their entire site. Also dank memes.

There have been some pretty good Cracked articles but goddamn College Humour is excellent. They've made so many excellent videos over the years, and I loved Hardly Working,

Well that's Adam Ruins Everything, he has a very specific niche and character that he plays (though he's exactly like this IRL). He even has his own TV series spun off of this.
