once again in my life, I have a very specific question and I can't find a solid answer and it might be because I'm bad at Google

Well, why don't you ask it? I've listened to a decent number of podcasts with some people who are knowledgeable on the back-end of Youtube stuff and has worked with MCNs and whatnot, so I may or may not know the answer.

TLDR version is that What would cause you not to get revenue, even if the video is qualified for monetization and you even turned it on?



So I recently put up a video and monetized it cause why the fuck not

It got almost 200 views. yay. but yea, I never earned anything for it

I figured I had to wait a few days before it shows anything, and well, I did! Its 3 days later and it DID update BUT it updated the views on my channel, it recognized that I had 200 more views, but still nothing on the revenue

I was worried that maybe the video was too short (its 25 seconds) but in my searching I discovered that you can monetize any video of any length as long as it qualifies, and well, I could turn it on, so that means it qualifies

on top of all of this, today, it DID show that I earned like half a penny. SO IT IS WORKING

BUT WHY DIDN"T IT WORK WITH THE HUNDREDS OF VIEWS?!

Well, overlay ads typically work in a CPM, which is dependent on what your rate on Google Adsense is (which is super low). So you have an overlay ad in the middle of this and you have like 200 views. That's still like nothing. If you're even making 2.6 cents on AdSense, you still have no reason to see a cent of that because you've only got 200 or so views.

This is assuming you aren't set up for CPC, which is based on how many people actually click your ads, in which case that number may very well be lower than the 200 you have there.

The thing is, I've made 3 other videos (Double Dragon 4 walkthroughs) and I've made more than a dollar and they have less than 1000 views combined


I figured I'd have more than half a penny with these 200 views




Just to clairify, I don't actually care THIS much about like 15-20 cents, BUT I'm gonna be posting videos like this and I want to make sure I know whats going on here

so what I think is happening is that even though I monetized the videos and enabled all 3 kinds of ads that can pop up, I think only one of them is actually popping up

and the only thing thats different from the other videos is that its wayyyyy shorter

Uh you have 200 views. That's why you've made no money.

If I knew anything about Youtube revenue, I would have more than $6~ after three years of making weekly videos :/

Youtube ad revenue is kinda mysterious, but I think it breaks down a little bit like this:

A video that short probably won't have ads most of the time it's watched. And some of the time it does show an ad, some of those people will have adblock. If the person skips it or watches less than 30 seconds/doesn't watch to the end if it's less than 30 seconds, you get no money. And I don't think banner ads make any money unless you click on them. Also, videos under 10 minutes make less money from ads anyway and videos that short will almost never have an ad at the start.

And anyway, you can't actually claim any real money until you've made $100, so I wouldn't worry about it unless you're going to make this a regular thing. And even then. Like I said, 3 years, $6~. Haaa...

The reason why you're not making any money is because 200 views is nothing. You need at least 1k to even maybe see a dollar. This conversion changes per month, too.

Actually, the real ideal length is just over 10 minutes, because if you have even 10:01 you get an extra ad.

YouTube apparently does a mix of CPM (cost per 1000 views) and CPC (cost per click) ads, which is based off of whatever their algorithm says will make more money. But since they don't share what a given ad is, it means you can't really know whether clicking on a given ad will actually have an effect.

Well, I mean, most of the time you're probably not getting CPC ads. Because CPC ads mean that Youtube doesn't get money unless someone clicks. So they're only likely to serve those ads if someone has a high likelihood of clicking (which they might be able to determine via cookie matching, user profiles, etc)

the built in youtube analytics isn't very accurate most of the time, and it does take a good 2-3 days before any results show in revenue. I been doing youtube on the side for 4 years now and my average is about 1m views per month brings in only 400ish usd. your 350 views video went up in revenue because most likely people here clicked on the ads like u requested boosting it
