It's more the case that a lot of the younger people who came here previously "grew out" of the site over time, while no new young people have been coming for the last 5-10 years because sites like Reddit, Twitter, and Tumblr fulfill their need for social media far more effectively.

Which is the main reason why the site has tried so hard over the last few years to force "newer" functionality onto the site, in the desperate hope of appealing to new users before the userbase dies off entirely - but it never actually works because a) they usually make those changes in the stupidest way possible, and b) because then the site just looks like a shittier version of the alternatives those younger users already have elsewhere.

This isn't even the best site for game help anymore (which is about it's only selling point beyond being a substandard social media hub), since most of the game boards are toxic as fuck and a lot of the FAQs (especially for newer games) are kind of unhelpful. At this point you're usually far better off just finding a wiki for whatever game you're playing, or going on YouTube and watching a guide video or walkthrough to answer whatever question you have.

So you basically have a site that isn't attracting new users for any reason, where older users are slowly losing interest and drifting away, leaving a core of disgruntled, always annoyed, and more and more curmudgeony and cynical lump of users who are only still here out of a profound sense of social inertia. And where the only new accounts that ever show up are almost always old troll users just putting on new disguises.

As to Reddit, I find the desktop site to be unusable, and actually prefer mobile through a 3rd party client.
