Yeah. One one hand, it seems like a massive waste of time and resources. On the other, it's literally imprisoning someone over a harmless joke. No good side to it.

This act define illegal communications as “using public electronic communications network in order to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety”. Breaking this law carries a six-month prison term or fine of up to £5,000. Imagine going to jail for half a year because you were shitposting and trolling on the internet. Watched the video. Kinda feeling a bit funny actually... truly, it couldn't have been more obvious that this is just a goof and pulling a little prank. His name is Count Dankula! And the way he was messing with the dog was pretty funny, especially the end when it zooms in on the dogs face.

The fact that this man is arested or receiving anything more than some whining from sensitive people is shocking to me. I'm not exaggerating, this situation is ridiculous. It's a fucking pug.

Look up Rotherham. It was kind of a big deal a few months ago. This is the danger of outlawing "hate speech." The definition can be shifted to curtail free speech. For example, southern political leaders in the US tried to shut down MLK on the basis that he used hate speech.

These days, in the UK, "hate speech" is a growing category which now includes offensive speech and is becoming increasingly blind to context.

I mean, I would agree with you. But just to play devil's advocate, even the US has limits on speech (against specific, imminent threats). So the US draws a line too-- just in a different place.

The difference is that anti hate speech laws make the UK's line much more malleable than ours. Politically radical and offensive speech are in serious jeopardy in the UK. Personally, I don't consider what they have to be "free" speech anymore. Yet, it's still closer to being free than a vast majority of other countries. From the perspective of billions of people in the world, US and UK speech laws must look practically indistinguishable.
