I can't remember if Chrono Cross was an issue but I have to imagine that one was even more insane on a translator than Xenogears

For most of Chrono Cross's dialogue by non-plot-relevant playable characters, they made some kind of tool that automatically applies all of the respective characters' accents, speech impediments, and other idiosyncrasies to the same base dialogue resulting in a very, um, memorable script. Whereas I heard the Japanese version mostly just gave each character a unique suffix and called it a day. So in that sense the English version is probably the superior product and thanks to the tool it probably didn't kill their translation/localization team too badly.

...But then consider the tool resulted in stuff like that kid who added -cha to the end of some word in like every single sentence and the mermaid who use umlauts in all of her vowels and it's like "nope nope nope."

Yeah Xenogears missed some references for sure (Ouroburos most obviously) but I consider those really minor issues. For the game itself, it really doesn't matter whether the character is called Ramsus or Ramses; same with things like the names of the omnigears. it's just a cute reference to out-of-game material. Most of the dialogue feels natural and is relatively error-free. Not perfect by any means, but again, it beats the PSX norm for text-heavy games.

And yes I'm aware that in a game with an incredible volume of text you can dig up some odder-sounding lines (although the "gay revelry" line doesn't bother me?).

Also on the reference note, since this is supposed to be FFT talk, I find it unbelievable that War of the Lions retranslated most of the names for no damn reason, but left Wiegraf intact, when the name is almost certainly meant to be Wiglaf from Beowulf.

I personally hate when character names are so on the nose like that

It would be like naming Fei "Jesus"

Gay revelry isn't a bad line, it's just something that got juvenile traction as a joke with RPG fans back when the game came out. As I was quite young back then myself, I have my own immature ties to its reception. <_<;

I'm glad Wiegraf remained Wiegraf. Wiglaf is almost certainly the reference, yeah, but it doesn't sound as cool to the modern English tongue, to be blunt. Same with Vormav->Folmarv and Balbanes->Barbaneth, although in those cases I'm not actually sure if there was a reference point.

They've already got Beowulf in the game, so why not Wiglaf?

can't wait for FFVIIR to get the WotL treatment and all the names get changed

I had no problem reading that FFT remake dialogue that someone posted.

It's readable and stylish!

the problem with the WotL script isn't its readability just like that's not really the problem with the original FFT script

"Stylish" is debatable though

Steady, sword.

It's crap, is what it is. This is what it's trying to emulate:

O for a Muse of fire, that would ascend
The brightest heaven of invention,
A kingdom for a stage, princes to act
And monarchs to behold the swelling scene!
[...]
Admit me Chorus to this history;
Who prologue-like your humble patience pray,
Gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play.

Note that even here though, the words are still smaller and clearer than in the WotL script. And this is genuinely Elizabethan English!
