I think 4 is one of the harder ones too.

IMO a good bit of 4's challenge came from cheap hits/deaths. Unlike most of the other Mega Man games it would often put you in a position to where you'd get hit or even die because you wouldn't/couldn't avoid something without knowing about it before hand.

2 is a classic but some bits are rough around the edges

3 might have gotten pretty rushed in the Wily levels but oh well it's still my fave

the top 5 are a lot better than the bottom 5

I don't recall that being the case at all. I grew up with the game so it's possible I know the levels like the back of my hand, but I don't remember this occurring. Also, you have a plethora of useful weapons such as Toad Man's, Bright Man's, Dive Man's, Skull Man's, Pharoah Man's, and even Ring Man's which goes through walls which can get you out of pretty much any situation.

But yes 4 is more difficult than the majority of the other games even with the Mega Buster. The only NES one I think is harder is 3 because of the bullshit remixed Robot Masters.

Well surely I'm not the only one that never uses the RM weapons except during boss fights. However, Se7en and I plan on analyzing Mega Man 4 vs Mega Man 5 later, so I'll definitely be including what I mean about cheap hits/deaths in that. Like you, I've played Mega Man 4 a lot but going back to it after a long time and me forgetting some of the stuff caused a lot of said cheap hits/deaths because I didn't remember what was coming. I don't have that problem that often in most other Mega Man games.

I tend to give 3 the nod over 2 and 9 because of the doc robot stages (which are brilliant and mostly make up for how bad Wily Castle is). Also the only MM with slide but not the charged buster.

9's honestly pretty great though. I do have to wonder if I'd put it above 2/3 if I hadn't played those to death when I was younger.

8's also extremely underrated (yes the plot and VA are derpy, but it's a great game otherwise), though not quite top tier.

Well I hear 2 common complaints about it.

1. It removes the need for most of the robot master weapons in each of the stages. Which that never mattered to me because I don't use them except for boss fights anyway.

2. It allows you to pretty much insta kill most enemies as they come up. This one I can actually see really lowering the difficulty of the games. It may seem like there's no difference between shooting an enemy with 3 normal shots or 1 charged shot, but it can definitely make a difference yes.

Though again, I'm extremely experienced with the Mega Man games and wouldn't say any of the original series is particularly challenging, but the Mega Buster definitely makes things easier in MM4 and MM5 at least.

yeah, the mega buster continuously eats up the second square wave, and there's only four sound channels used in those games (and noise is one of them), so...

9/10 had a better solution by making the charge sound only while you're actually charging it and not while you have a held charge, but only Proto Man even has the charge, so it has less of an impact that they fixed it (also 9/10 don't have a sound channel problem ANYWAY, though it would still be *loud*, it just wouldn't be using *resources*)

gameplay wise I'm not a big fan of the buster either, although I can see how it would be a huge lifeline for people who aren't comfortable mashing the fire button. I've got like this insane thumb reflex built up over years which makes me look essentially like I'm turbo-firing in MM3, but for some it's probably harder. Still, it's annoying how the mega buster does so much damage, basically erasing minor enemies as soon as they come on screen and dealing a chunk of damage to bosses. It's a bit too good generally, although usually the robot master weapons are still better if you have them for their respective boss fights. USUALLY. some of the weapons are super garbage (looking at you, power stone)

I really like the slide + no buster style of MM3

Prob the reason I didn't like the game as much as the others and found it hard.

The charge MM shot also is a whatever feature for me. It was cool with Heat Man's weapon though.

Sprite size and floaty (at least by MM standards). I'd still agree that it's above 1 an 8, but those are the big things.

Also the powers were pretty lackluster if I recall. Mainly because I mostly don't recall them.

Yea I can definitely see why those 2 things would bother people. I do remember the sprite size being a little bigger than need be. The floatiness never really bothered me.

As for the powers, I wouldn't say they really stand out as a bad set of powers. I mean you have your usual shield that surrounds you and spring man's weapon is kinda lame, but I think the rest are fine.

I could point to a lot of specifics (characters are too large, animations are weird, bosses being split up into 2 groups of 4 is weird, lackluster bosses overall, too much dialogue up front) but it pretty much all boils down to MM7 feeling like a huge step backwards from Mega Man X, despite coming out on the same platform almost two years later.

Well, as far as shortcuts go, E-Tanks plow it like most Wily fights. I beat it on the first try with those. MM7's the only one I've only beaten once, so I dunno how easily I'd be able to repeat that, granted. It's certainly one of the tough ones! I think MM had relatively easy final bosses in the NES days (some are a bit tougher like 2's, some were jokes like 1/3/5), but 7/8/9's are all quite tough especially if you don't use E-Tanks/M-Tanks/Rush healing, etc. Probably the influence of the MMX series there, which favours nasty final bosses much more, relatively.

MM7 to me felt thoroughly uninspired at virutally everything and the floatiness + zoomed in feeling were both turnoffs besides. I liked 8 quite a lot despite my affinity for the 8-bit style, but 7, nope.

OliviaTremor posted...

Personally I don't find the buster being too powerful is the problem; heck, in some games, it's not even that powerful! It's only a problem to the extent that it crowds out other weapons. But it's also just not a well-designed feature in general IMO; I don't want to play a game constantly holding down a charge button. And yeah its effect on NES sound is rather dreadful.

In general in Mega Man I assume that whatever weapon has the least effective range (except the shield, if that lacks range) will be the final boss's weakness. Usually this ends up correct. I don't really recall Spring being much worse in that regard than the norm, though it's still a pain.

Not roms unfortunately but I think that these were done so well that they should replace the other two games.

It would certainly be neat to be able to have all 10 games in 8-bit in one convenient playable collection.

...I wonder if Capcom would ever go for that?

Actually... now I'm curious if Capcom had anything to do with the remakes. Gonna check up on that.
