Board 8 > Has the new version of Tomb Raider and specifically Lara been regarded poorly?

I finally got around to playing Rise of the Tomb Raider and I was surprised to see the message board felt the game ruined Tomb Raider and that her character is terrible. I thought the two new games were the best they've been and Lara is much better now that she actually has a personality.

From what I've seen, it's been pretty polarizing - lot of love, lot of hate.

Anyway, I haven't played them but I will say this is the first time I've been remotely interested in the franchise. Once I hear word a third game is in the works, I'll queue the first two.

I really enjoyed both of the new games, don't really have an opinion of Lara as a character though.

I think that the first reboot game was pretty great. Haven't played the second one yet but I have it.

I never played the old Tomb Raider games, but I will say this - it's nice that they made an attractive Lara that is realistically proportioned. Can't compare personalities, but I think that new Lara at least has one, so if the old one didn't, then new Lara wins there too.

I like both old and new Lara, and some of the old games, but the new games are way better.

It's hard to ignore that the first game Lara had some..problems
She was panicking every damn time and she had that "I hate tombs" line that a lot of people hated
But it was such a great game I can forgive her
She matured in the second game so she is fine

I love Tomb Raider and enjoy both old and new. The old ones have better puzzles and overall 'tombs', but the new ones have better atmosphere and combat. Stories are negligible. Lara doesn't have much character in either versions -- or, at least, what she does have is nothing special.

The new games are polished but mediocre. I've 100%'d both new games and enjoyed them, but I've also known in the back of my mind that the experience isn't very memorable or unique. They feel like good run-of-the-mill games.

I was really hype for the first game but after playing it had very little hype for the sequel. Sequel was more of the same, for better or worse, and I'll likely play the third, just with no hype going in. I'm sure it'll be like the previous two and I'll enjoy it but never be truly thrilled. And that's kinda okay, I think. They're solid games... just with no impact.

Well, I've already got the first one on the PS4.

I tried to play it but I ended up losing a lot of progress at one point because the save system is bad so I never went back to it.

Never played the originals.

From the reboot, Lara herself is a little vanilla, but the game plays really well.

They're good. A little on the generic side and lacks uncharted polish. Second one especially had some dull stretches, but the first reboot was terrific.

Old Lara was cooler, like an action hero. New one is more of a real person, which is a different thing.

I never played the originals but the pre-reboot ones that were developed by Crystal Dynamics were still good from what I played of them. I think that was Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld? The reboot ones are great too, the only ones I've finished.

People love Horizon Zero Dawn touting it as a possible GotY, and yet it's basically the same game as the Tomb Raider reboots and those have mixed reviews.

Go figure.

Both of the previous Tomb Raiders were among the 25 best reviewed games of their respective years. And I hardly think they're "the same game"

I will say that the new Tomb Raiders might have gone a little overboard on the death sequences though
