I realized that the names on my spread sheets mean nothing to anyone but me, a very quick summary of them would be:

Ash: Scribe who studies ancient texts and fights with a spear and shield, giving her good offense, defense, and magic ability. The Mario basically.

Bel: Priestess who fights from afar with a bow and water magic. She hardly ever talks so it's difficult to tell what's on her mind at any given moment.

Cro: Mechanical Genius who crafts her own weapons. While powerful, they tend to malfunction sometimes. She takes this in stride and keeps on improving them.

Den: Gardener with little patience for people, or even plants which she makes grow extremely quickly with Earth magic. Still, she is a good person at heart.

Ere: An Enigma who travels from battlefield to battlefield putting those mortality wounded out of their misery. Her true motives are unknown.

Fay: Maiden raised by fairies who is a crack shot with a crossbow and can emulate their ability to fly using Wind magic. She has a rather down to earth personality, surprisingly.

Gal: Knight wielding a halberd and shield. Loyal to her Liege she acts as the front line of defense by expertly cutting down foes.

Hin: Bard who can play music so well it might as well be magic. It actually is magic though. Seriously.

Ion: Kunoichi who has recently begone her training and has already established herself as a prodigy. She has some sort of relationship with Que.

Jet: Student at a prestigious academy who holds a very dark secret. Any who get close to it go missing in short time.

Kai: Duchess and older sister to Den, she rules her castle and fights by commanding empty suits of armor to do her bidding.

Lax: Traveler who lives to see interesting new sites. With the ability to summon a kelpie to bear her over bodies of water, no land is beyond her.

Nem: Killer who delights in the pain of others. She instigates feuds between brothers and wars between nations. Her motives are unknown.

Ori: Treasure Hunter who is always out to make a profit one way or another, although she'd rather restrain a foe than bloody her hands.

Phi: Pugilist who will gladly take on better armed opponents to hear the frenzied cheers of the crowd after defeating them.

Que: Historian working at a prestigious academy. She has access to Weapons from across the world, and is willing to use them in the name of learning more from them.

Rev: Sailer and strong even by that measure. She once used the mast of a ship as it was being torn apart by a sea monster as a weapon... Or so she likes to say.

Sol: Lass who has never held a weapon in her life. She is instead protected by various Holy entity's summoned through prayer. What is her destiny?

Twi: Rouge who lives the lifestyle of a true hedonist, paid for with ill gotten coin. She has a friendly rivalry with Ori.

Ura: Witch with a kind heart even if she uses what most call Dark magic. She is good friends with Fay, who often brings her new magical items.

Vul: Guard who only wields a shield. This shield is large enough to crush those that underestimate her however. She acts as the last line of defense for her home after Gal.

Wes: Wild Child who was literally raised by wolves. What she lacks in grace she makes up for in ferocity and guts. She would like a friend however...

Xia: Monk trained in the art of war. Equally parts speed and power she would make a deadly foe if she wasn't terrified of getting into a serious battle.

Yah: Nun who looks over Sol and Xia. She is a potent healer and can even revive the recently deseased. That said she is a somewhat cold individual.

Also I'm ignoring (manually) anyone who calls me sword guy. None of these characters use swords, at least call me like... "Pre-gunpowder melee weapons guy" or something. Geez.

Except they're not. Swords are generally rubbish compared to most other weapons and, of course, completely outmoded by guns now. They were mainly kept for being a convenient side-arm because better weapons -- spears, poleaxes, bows, etc -- were inconvenient to carry around in civilian settings.

In terms of versatility, even a quarterstaff is a more practical weapon. Again, the only advantage to a sword is the fact it can be relatively easily carried on your person and had a longer reach than a dagger.

1. Guns are an extremely effective weapon and a cool one as well.

2. The fact that swords are generally worthless compared to other weapons has nothing to do with training. If it was a matter of a weapon being easy to use, everybody on the battlefield would use clubs instead of, you know, nobody really using clubs. Likewise, bows take more training than swords yet they were heavily used until replaced by the gun. And, of course, one of the most praised type of swordsman in history was the samurai yet it wasn't *their* primary weapon; instead they favored bows and polearms, with swords being a backup weapon.

3. Actually, the spear is considered the king of weapons. The quarterstaff/bo staff is often considered the ultimate martial arts weapon because of the variety of attacking styles. Swords, by contrast, were more for show and novelty. They were most often the toys of nobles who rarely saw the battlefield and a good many of the finest blades never saw use at all. In fact, there are a good number of swords and daggers which focused so much on decoration that they're effectively ornamental only.

The word you were trying to think of is "complement" and the good thing guns have done, unlike swords, is be an effective weapon. Armor basically made swords obsolete and then guns made that armor obsolete.

I meant in media with a setting either historical or fantastic where the hero could be given a multitude of other pre-gunpowder weapons. They almost always get a sword.

Not exactly, I mean I envision it as a Fighting game with heavy RPG elements, but it's really just something I work on out of boredom. I've mostly worked on the world building and other things like that, like I could easily write a page for each of the characters instead of a few sentences, but playing around with numbers and trying to "balance" them is fun too and gave me some new ideas for the project.

Guns are lame, this was firmly established in post #26. Zeus was saying that even out of melee weapons the sword was low tier, if you'd been following the conversation you would have known that's what I meant.
