That's not the worst shading by any means.
What I remember being taught was to start with the lightest tone of shading (the one that covers the most area), then move to the next darker shade, and the next darker one, etc. moving progressively further from the light source. Each time, covering a smaller area.
Also, the "edge" on the dark side should be extra dark.

Also, shading value references are great.

I think your shading works better in the bald guy pic because it's like...a bunch of smaller lines instead of solid areas. shading with pure black solid areas is an especially harsh stylized look, and I think more difficult than regular shading.

I don't really know how computer coloring works and if there's a way to make it register how much pressure you're drawing with. I use black gel pens for most of my drawing but I can get lighter shades depending on how I hold the pen.

not sure what other advice to give, I mostly just wing it when shading (and if I don't like something try and cover it up with more shading, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't)

If you're trying to specifically practice shading, try practicing with simpler shapes (like cylinders or even spheres). That gives you a better feel for how shade covers different objects. Then shading more complex objects, like people, will start feeling more natural.

Try practicing with hard shading first (not crosshatching and stuff). Where you use complete blacks to separate shadow and light. This'll help you visualize a 3D model a bit better and how light affects it.

See how this image mostly only used pure blacks as shading? After that you can change it up by replacing the pure black shadows with line scratching/crosshatching to create gradient lighting. It's just the same as how people learning shading colored drawings start with cel-shading before moving on to more complex stuff.

Well technically hard shading is less work than crosshatching. Use whatever you fell works.

You probably need to move your wrist and arm a little more, not just your fingers. At least that's the impression I'm getting.

For what it's worth, I'm not working with a whole lot of room. Don't have a desk (or even a table) in my apartment so when I draw I have the tablet on the arm of an armchair

Decided to finally test out one of my non-photo blue pencils I got years ago.


Needless to say, I felt like a sucker.
So I did some research and found that I needed to convert it to grey-scale and mess with the thresholds.
This is what I got:


Lessons learned: Draw lightly, which is generally a good idea, but the blue will disappear more easily that way.
