My lord, the people in CE are so indoctrinated in "woe me" that they cannot take positive advice and have to lash out. It is quite telling where people's minds are when to come to conclusions such as

1. Be grateful you don't live in a third world shithole
2. You're not entitled to happiness
3. No job is bad, no matter how degrading and fucking awful the working conditions are and how underpaid you are and how terribly you're treated and no matter how much the job makes you want to kill yourself.
4. Have you tried not hating your terrible job?
5. Don't try to take loans to rise out of your shitty position, just sell the assets you have and enter the wonderful world of subsistence living.
9. You're not entitled to upper education, just go to the library, you can definitely get school credentials at a library. And if you can't, well, fuck it, go shovel coal in the mines because lol I have nothing else to offer you. Are you happy with your job, by the way?
10. Starving African children just aren't working hard enough. They're a product of their choices, not their circumstances
11. I understand the world is unfair, and I'm okay with that, because I'm a direct beneficiary of it being unfair.
12. Starving African children just need to learn how to make bootstraps out of animal leather, and pull themselves up by their freshly made bootstraps.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to work. Don't you have to work at 3PM on a Tuesday, Addy? Where's that work ethic of yours?

"If nobody tried to make their lives better and just stuck with their shitty jobs, the world for the upper classes of society would be a better place"
Point 8 does not negate the fact that points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, and 12 all amount to "sit down, shut up, know your place, and don't ever ever ever try to make your life better because you're not entitled to any happiness whatsoever."

Instead of taking advice critically, they lash out with their perceptions of reality and try to state it as if it is true for everyone.

I highly suggest everyone that thinks things are impossible to study positive psychology. Specifically, start with this Ted Talk. Then read his book. It is a great read and you can apply the principles taught to actually improve your life.

But that means you actually have to be proactive and take responsibility for your life. Something I feel most of CE is incapable of accomplishing.

Except, I'm quite happy with where my life is headed. I'm okay with my job right now, I'm going back to school in a subject I like, and I know people who can help me get a job in that field in the future. If I were a selfish fucking prick who wanted to act smug and superior because I have a plan, I would embrace Rowe's manifesto with gusto. However, I am not, because I know that I'm only able to set myself on this path because I'm lucky enough to live in a country with good social services, without absolutely gauging costs of education, and because I know the right people to eventually get a good job. I have no PERSONAL reason to take my stance, but I have a MORAL reason to.

Every bad shit the baby boomers love to whine about millennial (lazy, entitled, no work ethic, having Alex all the time) was said about the baby boomers themselves by their parents and grandparents.

Every generation thinks the next one is shittier than they are. Every generation goes through a phase where this is the end of the world. Every generation is, on average, smarter than their parents.

Maybe some day one of these generations will be smart enough not to repeat history...

Why are millennials seen as lazy anyways? Doesn't make sense to me. Millennials are better educated than any generation in history. How is that an attribute of a lazy generation?

I get the entitled part but that's many because we were told we can do anything and be anything and as it turns out this world is a piece of shit. Also the worlds population needs to be reduced dramatically.

#7 is a joke. Volunteering for crap work just causes you to be treated like the company bitch. My sister works her butt off for a large corporation; she works 12 hour shifts (though she does get overtime for it), is always called in when someone calls out/didn't show, and is assigned the grunt work. She gets strung along with the promises of promotions and raises that never come her way. This whole "gotta earn your keep" attitude is what allows companies to work young workers like dogs while the older bosses sit back and reap the benefits. I'm not saying that when we graduate college we should be making six figures and calling the shots, but being told that we should be grateful for crap jobs is ridiculous.

What is a hard working job? I've worked some shit jobs in my life and I've also worked jobs where I'm paid well to just think.

Jobs don't exist anymore because there are too many qualified applicants for a limited number of jobs which actually need specialized labor. Because the worlds population is too fucking large and needs to be culled dramatically.

Gen X was the Footloose generation. The Flashdance generation. The Dirty Dancing generation. Gen X was the lazy, directionless, didn't have a Great War therefore never had to fight for their freedoms generation.

People don't just give you money because you work hard.

Working hard is almost entirely up to you as a person. There are jobs that you can slack and still get paid the same, but why waste your time like that. Hardwork builds CHARACTER and that's something sorely lacking in our society imho. When I go to work I ask myself the question 'how can I make this company better?' and its always lead to success for me.

we've become a society of selfish, entitled weaklings and its just sad to see.

I would have to guess you don't work minimum wage jobs, since it is just he opposite. The slackers who suck up get ahead, while the hard workers are left behind. Working hard and going above and beyond tends to keep you in that position, since they realize it will hard to replace you.

It's not like all the advice is bad but most of it is basically a narrative that says

A: Work hard
B: If your hard work doesn't get you what you deserve, be complacent anyway.

Or, you know, make the best out of a bad situation. Viktor Frankl did it. POWs did it. Just cause something is difficult or doesn't go your way means you should whine or bitch about it. Either do something about it to make you feel better, or create something in your mind to make work more bearable and allows you to tolerate, perhaps enjoy, work from a different mental model.

POWs from Vietnam never should've been put into their situation to the begin with, and neither should Holocaust victims. Those are bad examples. Those were preventable if better human nature had stepped in at some point - which is my point - why should people be complacent with shitty lives and not seek to change the system that makes their lives shitty?

Stop with the Neo-Bhuddist garbage. We don't live in a dirt poor nation incapable of taking care of its citizens, but the same people who shout "WORK HARD" totally ignore the problems that occur when hard work doesn't result in social mobility - which is what America essentially promises. It's built on the idea that your hard work resulting from envy will acquire you what you desire. That's what our Capitalism system is built upon.

In many cases, it works - and that's fantastic - but the Libertarianisns touting these narratives want to dismantle our social safety nets and make life worse for some people, including those who work hard but ultimately can't support themselves because life isn't a fairy tale.

People should be very angry that politicians backstabbing and deceiving people get lavish lifestyles while the average worker gets no upwards mobility despite pushing themselves harder in a more honorable way. That's one of the big reasons Trump was elected, y'know? People wanted more prosperity because they're tired of our shitty system. He turned out to be a conman, and now some radio host clown is telling people to just accept how shitty life is while other nations that aren't the U.S. endure far less economic strife.

I'm mostly angry at the philosophy behind the pledge, not the pledge itself. There's a line between religious dedication to letting yourself get fucked by a terrible system and being a lazy bum. People who complain that their lives are shitty in spite of their hard work are completely justified in doing so. Because they're right, and it doesn't have to be that way, and the solutions don't require a massive shift in economic ideals that no longer rewards hard work.

That and vandalism. I mean if you think about it, was some of these protests people have today that much different than what our founding father's did like the Boston Tea Party. The only reason they even fought, was because Britain finally called their bluff and invaded, and they had to be bailed out by France after Britain all but destroyed the untrained and poorly equipped US militias.

nothin wrong with whining or bitching

This. Whining and bitching are what this nation was built on.

Those lazy founding fathers should get a job and be lucky they are part of Great Britain, the greatest country in the world!

Wahhh why do we have to help pay for the war you fought on our behalf wahhhh we're to lazy to fight against you ourselves we need the French to do it for us wahhh

Seriously, whining and bitching are among the most American things out there.

Just a reminder, Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie also had a TV show where they go around and do peoples' jobs, and I don't see anyone acting like they are blue collar heroes

Wikipedia shows that they goofed off and didn't take/consider those professions seriously.

"What was supposed to be an experiment in learning how to adapt to doing chores and getting their hands dirty turned out to be a failure. In the process they would ruin a dairy farmer's milk supply, wreak havoc at a local Sonic Drive-In and take advantage of an employer's credit card, ultimately getting fired from every job they took up."

" In this season, there were episodes where they were given little or no money while interning, or their internships were shortened because instead of being professional, they would goof off or fail to do the work properly."

"The season features Paris and Nicole playing "Wife" to a different family every episode, in a similar manner to Wife Swap. Paris and Nicole alternate between the family each episode, with the family then deciding which of them was better in the role.

This season was also unique, as Paris and Nicole did not leave L.A. The families they stayed with were L.A. area residents, and the episodes often focused on Paris and Nicole's personal lives and careers as well as the challenge of being a wife and mother. This season also featured guest appearances from Paris and Nicole's well-known friends, family and associates. Since the season was set in their hometowns, Paris and Nicole had cell phone and credit card usage, previously denied to them in earlier seasons."

Comparing it to 'Dirty Jobs' which Mike Rowe takes those jobs as serious as one can while being an arm deep in a cow's rectum or wadding through a sewage pipe is fucking disingenuous lol.

By all means Mike, tell us how to get a car without going into debt while working an entry level job.

It's called used, or if you want new, there are plenty in the low to mid 10k range. Like holy fuck, I bet some folks here other than myself can tell you this through personal experience.

I'd say a new car is still better than used. By the time you're done sinking money into a used car, you've effectively paid off a loan for a new one. Taking on debt is not bad, as long as you understand how to manage it. When you buy a used car, you're buying someone else's problem.

"Eat shit and learn to like the taste" is not an ideology to follow.

I'd be alright with this cause some of it is true, but anything can be seen as "whining and complaining" to Rowe and most conservative leaning people.

The lower classes are absolutely getting fucked by the rich and powerful, but we're supposed to just stand here, take it up the ass, like it, then ask for another. How brainwashed can you be? Yes, this is just another brainwashing attempt by said rich and powerful to help themselves keep the money and power they have.

And conservatives call us "cucks".

And I say this as a blue collar guy who works a pretty "dirty" job.

I admit, it'd be nice if the world worked the way he paints it. the idea if we just work a little harder we'll be successful, because our fate is 100% in our hands
and it's easy to believe as well. because it's all common sense stuff. "don't fool around, make the best of what you've got, always look for greater opportunities, etc." it's just that on a deeper level, we have a huge inequality with reality and the american dream. I just feel for the people who actually believe in it. like, they're either getting fucked over by this or they have no sympathy for those that are
