I'd say a new car is still better than used. By the time you're done sinking money into a used car, you've effectively paid off a loan for a new one. Taking on debt is not bad, as long as you understand how to manage it. When you buy a used car, you're buying someone else's problem.

Lmao no. I've never paid more than $3000 for a used car, and until I bought the one I've got now I'd never paid more that $1500 for one. I also rarely have mechanical issues because I know enough about cars to handle routine maintenance like oil and spark plug changes. My repair bills for all my used cars since I was 18 are less than $2000. Overall, having bought 5 cars in 15 years, I've spent less that $10,000. Math tells me with trade ins on my cars (except the first) the total is roughly $7200. I was fortunate enough to have family who insisted I be educated on cars enough to not get hustled by a slick salesman. I've also never financed a car, saving up to buy my first one and always trading in on later cars once I saved up enough to upgrade. Admittedly, I drove some real shitty clunkers for a long time but they got me where I was going reliably.

Most leftist's definition of a better world is "gimme more stuff for less effort".

Yet, that is exactly what the rich does.

So less a denial that "better world" is just leftist for "gimmie" than trying to hide greedy shallow commercialism behind others' greedy shallow commercialism. I consider myself a leftist but I'm tired of seeing my side crying like a child that bases mom's love on how many toys she buys you.

Why are people acting like this pledge is meant for everyone? I thought it was designed to be used as part of the application process for his scholarship awards. Don't sign it and your application for money for school is denied. I think it could be simplified and worded better but I understand and agree with the general idea. As someone working a job that is consistently voted as one of the worst in North America, I make great money for what I do. I approve of his efforts to destigmatize trades and labour work.

He never claims to be an authority on hard work. Bill Nye dubbed himself the Science Guy. The pledge is for people who are applying for free money from his charity.

Privilege is irrelevant to the validity of Mike Rowe's list. Even a poor minority who's had all the worst breaks in life is better off adopting those points than one who doesn't.

I never claimed the first part. Mike Rowe's list even acknowledges that there is privilege in the part about life being unfair. However, that does not change the validity of this list. Like I said above, a poor minority who's had all the worst breaks in life is better off adopting those points than one who doesn't.

No one in this topic has actually made a legitimate attempt to point out the problems with this advice on a specific. It's either been a strawman defense or some secondary excuse because this doesn't factor in other components (race/privilege) that it was never intended to address.

If you never meant to claim the first, then the first post of your's that I quoted is nonsensical. Like, just pure straw man, since nobody has ever stated that privilege is the only reason for success and failure. But the very acknowledgement of privileged existence denotes the validity of the complaint about it.

You're tap dancing around the issue again, and not doing a particularly good job of that. I'll ask you point blank to address this point: how would a poor minority without any discernible "privilege" be worse off for following this advice?

None of which you can apparently point out.

My position has always been that this list is privilege agnostic. I don't take issue with millennials for pointing out privilege, I take issue with them for using it as an excuse to be lazy or "waiting until the playing field is fair" instead of working hard and taking responsibility in a way that will still greatly benefit them today regardless.

The concept of privilege is a macro issue that no individual can affect and is hard, if not impossible, to even quantify and address. This list is addresses the micro issues of improving your own life and work prospects whether privilege exists or not. You can certainly hold the view that disparities resulting from privilege or historical discrimination need to be remedied, but they have nothing to do with the validity of this list. That's why those complaints are being dismissed; they're just excuses for inaction, not arguments against this advice.

The entire string of your posts in this topic thus far have been:
1. Assert a strawman fallacy without pointing it out
2. Insist that I admit I'm wrong before you engage further (even though you keep responding anyway)
3. Consistently ignore a very straight forward question that is completely relevant to the point of my position
