Board 8 > 2001 vs 1997 - Best match pics for both years?

In the interest of fairness for the last potentially good match of the contest (and in the self-serving interest of giving 2001 a fighting chance when it might get walloped), I want to figure out the best picture representatives (and order) for both years. After we've established a consensus of sorts, I'll tag Allen and hope for the best. He was responsive in the stats topic last night, so maybe he'll actually check it out. Or maybe I'm wasting everyone's time.

Anyway, @charmander6000 had a great selection for 2001 in the stats topic. Here it is:

2001
Super Smash Bros. Melee / Final Fantasy X
Metal Gear Solid 2 / Paper Mario
Grand Theft Auto III / Halo
Silent Hill 2 / The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons

I think it looks really good; the only change I might suggest is Devil May Cry in place of Silent Hill 2 since SH2 was represented last round.

For 1997, the top four are pretty cut-and-dry. It's the bottom four that is open to some debate. I'm thinking

Final Fantasy VII / Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Goldeneye 007 / Mario Kart 64
Star Fox 64 / Fallout
Diddy Kong Racing / PaRappa the Rapper

The only thing I did here was swap Turok for Diddy Kong Racing, which is definitely a stronger N64 game. I think there's room to play with those last three games, though.

Please give me your suggestions, and hopefully we can get an awesome pic up there and make Allen's job easier for him.

Quake 2
Bushido Blade
NFL Blitz

personally, I don't see much of a point in including DKR when we already have Mario 64. the 64 has enough representation in 97.

and if we're being honest, FFX/Melee is the top line for 01. don't hide it away because of FF7. it is what it is.

97 looks damn good with that lineup, and maybe swap out Parappa for something for the sake of variety.

01, I'll second putting in DMC instead of SIlent Hill, again for variety's sake. I'd also like to see Paper Mario on the third line instead of Halo or GTA, because I feel like 2001 was all about the PS2/GC/Xbox, with the N64 kind of just there.

Actually I totally lied about Paper Mario being my GotY. Unfortunately my actual favorite game from 2001, Dragon Quest VII, is definitely too weak to include!

Cool, I feel like most people are on the same page for 2001 (swapping in MGS2 and Devil May Cry). I also think 1997's first six pictures are pretty locked in. The main question is 1997's last two pics:

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
PaRappa The Rapper

Should these two remain? PaRappa is probably the more eye-popping and relevant game, so I think it should stay. But Turok does 1997 no favors. Even 20 years ago, that game basically stopped existing the moment Goldeneye came out. I feel Diddy Kong Racing or any fondly remembered PS1 game would be a better suggestion.

What about Golden Sun? It had a respectable showing in the GotD. Not sure what it could replace, but it had some decent strength six years ago. I'd put it with GTA III, at least.

The "problem" for 2001 is that it has such an abundance of console goodness that there's almost no room for handhelds and PC. I feel like Zelda shores up the handheld side pretty good, mainly because it's Zelda.

Yeah, the first six games for 2001 pretty much have to be there. After that you could include a handheld (Advance Wars/Golden Sun/Zelda) and then either another PS2 game (DMC/Silent Hill 2) or maybe Sonic Adventure 2

I'm thinking Golden Sun would beat SH2/DMC soundly, but it's apparent that individual game strength doesn't matter as much in this contest. If it did, 2001 would win easily anyway.
