The thing I don't get is how Lance tells you you would have been Champion after beating him if not for Blue getting there first. So was there no Champion before Blue?

Maybe when Blue beat him, he got demoted to Elite 4 and someone else got kicked out.

There was no champion in Red/Blue, the Elite 4 just recently formed, kind of like in Sun/Moon

Honestly I think it's gotta be the other way around, like imagine you dedicate your life to Pokemon battling and serve as this final gatekeeper for so long and there's just... no one strong enough to beat you. And then FINALLY this dumb kid comes along and you sigh thinking he must have lucked his way through Agatha and the others... but then he wipes the floor with you and your three Dragonites.

And you're thinking "okay good, we have a champion now at least and plus, imagine how good this kid will be in 3 or 5 or 10 years? this is going to completely change the sport, nobody's been this talented before for years, maybe ever."

And then by the time you finish thinking through all that it happens again.

Lance had to have been so excited about this new era and the shake-up that Red and Blue caused that he just quit pretty soon after, shook off his malaise, redoubled his training, and returned to make the champion run himself. And he wins and becomes the actual champion this time.

And then he gets knocked off by Gold and that must have been a bad day for Lance.

The better question is who was Champion before Blue? If it was just Lance, then why didn't they have a champion yet?

I guess either there had never been one, or they had resigned from their position (I assume Red does this between RBY and GSC) and nobody had beaten the Elite Four after that until Blue

The Elite 4 was just recently made in Red/Blue. I think there was a poster in one of the Pokecenters (Viridian or Pewter)

I always just thought Oak was brutal, borderline abusive to Blue. Reminds me of asshole baseball dads from when I was a kid. "Who cares you had three hits, you struck out to lose the game!"
