Out of curiosity what do other people do when lower rated players out perform their higher rated team mates?

Player 1 - 29 rec, 450 yards, 4 TDs last season / 6 rec, 68 yards, 1 TD this season
Player 2 - 12 rec, 160 yards, 1 TD last season / 8 rec, 62 yards, 2 TD this season
Player 3 - 31 rec, 244 yards, 1 TD last season / 3 rec, 73 yards, 0 TD this season

Player 1 is 77 rated (76 last season)
Player 2 is 80 rated (80 last season)
Player 3 is 82 rated (82 last season)

Like maybe it's slightly coverage related but it still baffles me. Especially as off rating alone I want to drop Player 1 and play Player 4 (an 80 rated 2nd rounder from last year)

I will play the higher rates every Time because as a concept, higher rating means higher chance of a good performance. Better performances by lower ratings are just chance.

Unless its like a really strong trend late in the season, then you probably want to ride the hot hand

I leave the lower rated guy where they are because it is clearly working for them.

Maybe they are a Wes Welker type who just works better there.

For offense, it was Bucs WR David Givens, but Bell had twice as many yards as Givens, scored as many TDs, and set an NFL record, so Bell is really the only choice.

For defense, it was Pats OLB Jason Babin for reasons I can't even understand.

Yeah there isn't anyway I want to lose an 86 OLB (former rookie of the year) who will hopefully get to 88-90 range by year end. Especially as he was drafted as a 76 rated 3rd rounder. Even for a 1st and a 3rd, I'd rather keep him. Not like highly rated OLBs are easy to come by

Dolphins Draft History

2006 Draft (Season 2)
1st Round (31st overall) - G Max Jean-Gilles
3rd (76th) - DE Matthew Rice
3rd (95thl) - SS Michael Huff
4th (99th) - P Tom Malone
4th (110th) - OT Daryn Colledge
6th (191st) - DT Manase Hopoi
7th (210th) - WR Jason Avant
7th (223rd) - C Nick Mangold

- Max has started every game since he was drafted and has reached maximum overall rating

- Rice sat behind two DEs who never missed a start and provided prototypical backup DE numbers in his four years as a Dolphin. He is one of the longest-tenured members of the free agent sheet.

- Huff, like Rice, sat behind someone who never missed a start, but backup SSs receive more snaps (probably due to special teams) and production than backup DEs. Thus, his rating gradually increased before he was traded to the Pumpkins for HB Jacquizz Rodgers in S7.

- Malone has been one of the best punters in the league since he joined and is the top-rated player at his position.

- Colledge was decent as a backup OT and like Rice was not retained after his four years with the club. He is currently a free agent

- Hopoi was strictly a pass-rusher as he had more sacks than tackles + FFs + FRs in his three or four seasons as a Dolphin. He later signed with the Broncos as a free agent, and has remained a #3 DT there.

- Avant was a decent #4 WR. He was not retained by the Dolphins after a few seasons with the club and fell victim to the annual Madden Free Agent Purge.

- Mangold, the second-to-last pick in the draft, was thrust into the starting lineup several times during his Dolphin career due to injuries. Unfortunately, the rise in rating made him crave a starting job. He was traded to the Browns in S6 along with a 5th rounder in exchange for G Andy Christensen and a 4th rounder. That eventually resulted in future transactions that resulted in an extra 1st rounder. Not bad for #223.

Combination of things

Drafted as a 75 MLB
Converted to an OLB and went from 75 > 82 (so very lucky)
Rookie season (71 Tackles, 8 Sacks, 2 FR, 2 INT) - 82 > 84
Second season (63 Tackles, 10 Sacks, 3 FF, 1 FR, 1 INT) - 84 > 86

He started in his rookie season. He semi-rotated snaps with Babin last season (58 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 3 FF, 1 INT). Half the reason I rotated Babin was to give Tufts more playing time but also to give Galette (2nd rounder last year) more playing time.

Highest jump I've seen from one of my drafted players in a season was the 78 > 84 for McClain last year (34 Tackles, 6 Sacks, 3 FF, 2 FR, 1 INT). I'm sure others have seen similar as I look at some of the names I was interested in during drafts who are in 90's now (Calais Campbell springs to mind) and he was probably low 80's when drafted

I'm pretty sure Winston has seen a decent jump just from playtime and he was grabbed in FA rather than drafted. He's an 89 now and I snagged him 2 seasons ago in FA as a low-mid 80's (83-85 or so).

I think rookies with no playtime at best see like maybe a 1-2 jump. They have to play and perform well to see big jumps. I've tried to at least have my rookies as back-ups or somewhere in the depth chart so they see some sort of snaps rather than just sitting the year and getting nothing for that reason

KCF has explained it way better in the past. But basically players get larger jumps based on both individual stats plus being part of a productive units (even if they did not contribute much to the productivity). Which is why I assume the good teams keep getting because even their fringe players get jumps just by being a 'part' of a productive unit

Oh and KCF once told me about a player who was drafted/picked up as a 70 (or low 70's) Guard (I think) and progressed to a 90+ over the course of several years
