It was a general contemporary of Bill Nye's show, but the real differentiator was that in order to watch Beakman's World you had to watch it on CBS on Saturday (at a time when CBS was pretty much the last-place channel in terms of Saturday morning programming), whereas Bill Nye was on PBS on Friday afternoons, when there was pretty much nothing else on TV for kids to watch. Beakman was also aimed at a bit of a younger audience, whereas Bill Nye was blatantly trying to pander to a more pre-teen/teen audience. So most of the 90s kids on the Internet fall pretty squarely into his demographic.

That being said, I always vastly preferred Beakman over Bill Nye, if only because I never really saw Bill Nye as a "science guy" as much as I knew him as "that guy who seemed like sort of an asshole on Almost Live", who usually seemed to be the least funny person on the show. So for me, whenever someone says Bill Nye, the first thing I think of is this:

I'm sort of in the same boat as Dikitain, though - if someone asks me to name "my" childhood science TV guy, I'm going to say Mr. Wizard every single time.

Mostly because it was cheaper, but also because it gave them a large sampling of shows that weren't showing in the US on any other channels. Still, it was a great show if you were actually a smart kid in the 80s who was into, you know, learning things.

But a lot of people today don't really remember that Mr. Wizard was around LONG before the 1980s. He had a show in the 1950s which pretty much popularized the entire concept of a kids' science show:

I'll admit I never heard of Watch Mr. Wizard until long after Mr. Wizard's World went off the air. I don't think a lot of people are going to look at it today and think "This is a great show", but it is certainly influential to pretty much all kids science shows today even down to the pacing.

I watched the first episode last night about Global Warming and I just sat there and went "yeah... and?" The vast majority of people know GW is a legit problem, the issue is no one does anything about it and Bill didn't even give any tips, he just kept screaming out to fix it for the last 10 minutes.

In Bill Nye's defense, I doubt this was his idea, and and I doubt anything this cancerous has ever latched on to the Democratic party in his lifetime, which probably caught him off guard. He's probably reeling about his damaged reputation.

Horoscope is the best comparison I have seen. I like that.

The gender spectrum is mostly people interpreting any sort of deviance from Hollywood's "normal" as a new thing entirely, rather than a variation of an existing one. That or they're in dire need of attention. It's like a huge exaggerated form of hipster that can't even have a specific gender because it's too mainstream. One of the worst things about it is that there are a few people that may genuinely fall outside of the typical parameters, but all the posers on tumblr flood the market and delegitimize them. It's like feminists (want equality) getting their message steamrolled because of the female chauvinists (man-haters), who then become the face of the issue and turn everyone against it.
