Out of all the shows available to pull a stunt like that, who would've ever guessed it would be HAPPY DAYS to have someone literally jump over a shark. That show would have to be last or near last on everybody's list.

First off, Urkel began as a breath of fresh air for my culture. "You mean black people are nerds, too? They're not all super aggressive athletes who commit violent acts at will! You're kidding me!"

Secondly, he and Fonz are, funny enough, very similar. They're both caricatures that are some what of an anomaly in their shows but ones that became the highlights of their shows because of it.

I think the modern equivalent is Amy Ferra Fowler. What started out as a side character has become the primary source of humor and interesting plot lines on the show. When she's not involved in an episode I don't enjoy it as much. The show has spent 5 seasons humanizing the least relateable human beings in existence and Amy comes along and just throws it all away...but in a good way. She's SO ridiculous and ostentatious in caricature that it trumps everything else.

"jump the shark" isn't supposed to mean "when a show gets really bad", it is supposed to be the point where it becomes apparent a show is now totally sundered from what it originally was, and that usually has a negative effect.

Nope. It comes from a "Happy Days" episode where the Fonz literally jumped his bike over a shark, and fans the world over complained that the show had just become something very different, and all about cheap thrills, and had 'jumped the shark' into something irreparably silly.

I'm fairly certain that "jump the shark" was not in the parlance when the show was actually running. I'm pretty sure it was coined much later, circa the 90s.

I may be wrong.
