I just can't believe that there were people in her who thought England would win a penalty shootout.

They weren't even English!

italy is very bad at penalties too to be fair

acrossbar and a weak shot saved them

as for Vlado, so true. Italy's midfield was beautiful, BRILLIANT. wonderful work with the football, sheer domination, amazing control, great change to play and chances every which a way. They will give germany a game.

I was actually speaking strictly of the penalties. If you can't convert so many chances, you can't complain too much if you lose, so I can't speak too positively of Italy's work before the penalties.

Pirlo's brilliant penalty, though, turned things around. They were A GOAL DOWN at the third penalty, another miss would've meant it was over. And Pirlo went and did that. THIS is what separates the great from the absolute best in the world.

You missed chances because we made you. Johnson and Terry putting pressure on your strikers and making blocks and deflections. That's called good defensive play, not your profligacy.

It became largely long ball when Carroll on, which tbqh makes a lot of sense.

oh so the pretty much ten shots on net that were bad strikes or accidental finishes were good marking and proper positioning right?

because pretty much ten goals could have been scored by italy. there'd have been no chance for hart to stop so many chances. your defense wasn't perfect. neither was italy's at that

Those bad strikes, again, were the result of pressure from people like Johnson. Balotelli's rebound from that Hart parry was because Terry was out quickly to close him. The shot from the second parry was because Terry was all over him, forcing him to take it early and put it over.

It was our quality of defence + Scott Parker that got the game to 0-0.

well enjoy it i guess. it's amazing how a team like england can play "italian" football and get away with it. but god forbid italy elected to defend and hopeful counter/play for PKs, the world would be at arms because a 4 time champion was doing it

And honestly we played to our means. Not a great team on the whole, but built on a strong defence.

We absorbed pressure like we planned to, just couldn't quite score the one chance we had. Rooney's last-minute overhead was what we were looking for, that late strike on the counter. Didn't happen.

Think of it like pro-wrestling. A heel does heelish things and everyone hates them for it.

So a face does the same thing to the heel and just get cheered even louder because they're getting their just desserts. That's what it would have been, had we won.

Portugal exist

Like think what you want about Italy but Portugal are literally morally offensive. That is one issue I won't be shaken on, they are absolute villains and the worst. No dispute, no debate, nothing but fact.

I'm angrier at the implication that Portugal are anything other than "bad guys" than I am at England's loss on penalties (since it was inevitable)

Not surprising that an England supporter would have a grudge against Portugal after 2004

I think it's silly to call teams good or evil, but what do I know.

Also I've never seen a team be "good at penalties". It's purely luck-based, and maybe a good bit of an emotional factor as well.

It's nothing to do with 2004 or 2006. They just have a lot of bastard footballers and their footballing culture is based on everything that makes people hate football. Not saying others aren't or that other teams don't dive and such but uh yeah.

(Also Pepe, who as I've said before may literally be psychotic)

And penalties aren't "purely luck-based" at all. Joe Hart watched DVDs of every Italian penalty for the last 10 years.

Now, do I think it has more luck about it than the usual game? Sure. Do I think it's not really that much to do with an actual football game and is thus a pretty poor way to settle things? Sure.

"Guessed" (a dumb word because it was based on prior evidence that he had studied) right for Balotelli's penalty and I think the winning one, too. He went the right way but the penalties were just too good, which is a shame. But the homework he did was clearly sound - in the end, the most well-taken penalty will beat even the best and most prepared keeper.

Right. I won't presume to know more about soccer than anyone in here. But it seems to me that missed penalties are more likely to be due to the offensive player just plain missing the goal than they are to the goalie making a save. Meaning it IS mostly luck based. And that's assuming EVERY save is due to goalie preparation/skill and not just taking a lucky guess.

Man.

That must have been a crappy way to lose, even as an Italy fan. Sorry :(

It's just numb disappointment, it's happened way too often to be properly destroyed by it. When, eventually, a team I support wins a penalty shootout (Tottenham or England), it will be a miraculous day.

Well you could then attribute that to the keeper putting them off, something else that happens often. Barthez stopping the penalty from being taken to go and clean some mud from his boots or something, and the guy then missing, would be an example.

I already said that penalties are "more" luck-based than a normal football game but I sure as hell wouldn't call them "purely luck". You don't have a record like England do without there being something fundamentally wrong, for instance.

Well, I would suggest that England's record is due entirely to their fragile emotional state. They're a team who is known for choking. I consider your reaction to the team in general to be fairly representative of your country as a whole. When your entire nation expects you to choke, it shouldn't be that surprising when you do.

When the Italian player missed a PK, I'm guessing everyone on the team was like "oh well, we'll get one back and we still have a chance in this team," but when the English player hit one off the post, I'm assuming the entire nation (including the players and coaches on the team) said "OH NO HERE WE GO AGAIN GODDAMMIT WHY DO WE SUCK SO BAD"

We generally don't, to be honest. We were MASSIVELY hyped going into 2006 and 2010 (and rightly so - almost all of our players were vital parts of top-4 premiership teams, at a stage when we dominated European football) and people were optimistic as a result. This time pretty much everyone knew we had a pretty mediocre squad. And if our record in penalties is because of our attitude, it isn't luck anyway.

More important, however, was the freedom Andrea Pirlo enjoyed. At times England’s shape was good, bringing both strikers back into the midfield zone, remaining compact and getting both Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney goalside of Pirlo. When Welbeck was in a position to close down the Juventus midfielder, he generally did his job excellently.

Rooney was much sloppier, and after half an hour when Pirlo’s dominance had become clear, Joe Hart was clearly heard shouting at Rooney to pick him up. Hodgson clearly wanted Rooney to do this, because for much of the game Rooney could be seen half-heartedly jogging towards Pirlo. It was reminiscent of the 2011 Champions League final, where he started off marking Sergio Busquets, before gradually leaving Manchester United outnumbered in midfield.

It’s odd that Rooney’s tactical indiscipline has become such a problem – only a few years ago his willingness to sacrifice his own attacking game for the good of the team was reagrded as one of his main qualities. England could have done with someone like Rooney’s club teammate, Park Ji-Sung, who did a superb job on Pirlo in 2009/10 – Urby Emanuelson did something similar for Milan earlier this year. Leaving Pirlo free was suicidal, and he completed over 30 more passes than any other player.

Zonalmarking.net critcises Rooney for not pressuring Pirlo.
