But will there be a Wii U achievement system? Or when they say it's "up to the developers" does that mean that the achievements are in-game only? Because one is much more desirable than the other.

There's no indication that there's not a system-wide achievement system, just that not all games have to have them.
My reading of it was he said achievements would be developer driven (local to games) and not something they'd be supporting or encouraging. Just in general PR terms if they were planning some sort of framework he'd be selling and encouraging it rather than talking about developers who don't like having to use it. It's not literally saying its not happening but its not something he'd mention if it was.

What that likely means is 'the developers decide if they want achievements or not, they still add to a score if you wanna brag about that'.
I don't think it's ridiculous to have an optional achievement system that is also global like 360/ps3 achieves. Something like Steam, which the Wii U has been emulating more and more closely as more details are revealed.
unless there's a noticeable different in quality between Wii U and PS3 versions of multiplatform games it might come down to whether the game has achievement support or not for which version I get.
Nintendo has not chucked the idea of requiring people to have friend code
nintendo literally doesn't learn
it's ok though because neither do their fans, still calling that the U is going to dominate again, they've done a good job in making apple their model and it's a little scary because that's how you develop a cult that will buy god damn near anything, if the U doesn't bomb there's pretty much no chance of nintendo returning to it's pre-2004 greatness.

xenoblade is the only great thing nintendo has done since 2005, and I almost feel like they should get no credit for that because it's simply a studio they acquired and then they didn't even want to globalize it.
they still have a decent volume of good games but those transcendently great games? the majora's masks, metroid primes, and melees? not going to happen as long as wii fit will sell 43mil, nintendo is literally punished financially when they actually try to make good games, their fanbase should feel awful about themselves as people for allowing that.

I'd argue the 2006 - 2011 is the best 5 year time frame Nintendo has ever had.

DKCR has amazing level design, it's hobbled by motion controls that make no sense for a game like that, not allowing the classic controller in order to force said motion controllers down our throats, the roll mechanic being less fluid than the original trilogy, and the almost completely recycled soundtrack(DKC had good music but a new game deserves new material)
galaxy is very good but no I wouldn't call it a transcendent game, I've never really felt that for 3D mario games, they're fun but generally aren't very powerful experiences

Galaxy 1 suffered from following the same philosophy as the Wii, focusing on gimmicks rather than quality gameplay, which is actually fair since it was a "new" theme for the series, so they had to hammer it home.
Galaxy 2 was amazing because it stopped being obsessed with putting the "lol gravity" stuff into every level, and just focused on making fun levels.
DKCR had disappointing gameplay because of a bad design philosophy, which was to design levels to be balanced for Diddy and 4 hearts. And even the fact that DK had 2 hearts pretty much ruined the game, because they designed the levels so that being hit is okay, since it's not a OHKO. You can tell this is the problem, because the sections where obstacles are OHKOs (mine cart/rocket levels) are very fun and the level design is excellent.
So 1/3 is kinda bad, even if that 1 is one of the best 3D platformers ever

Haha, Apple is a pretty good company to make a model of, considering they pretty much have more money than god.
Some people are still excusing Nintendo's refusal to adopt clearly working models... Then people are saying it'd be good if Nintendo were like Apple because Nitnendo getting money is what matters, not us getting good games.
Threads like these really make me shake my head.
