I saw FF13 new for $30 a few weeks ago, you can probably find for $20 somewhere.

Also, Persona 3 FES on PSN is $10 for a 70 hour game, and it's awesome.

Dark and Demon's Souls both actually have fantastic stories and characters. It just doesn't tell you what is going on, they give you very small details from time to time through character conversations. Item descriptions then fill in the rest of the holes.

You manually you have to piece everything together after the information is given to you however. Basically, nothing is outright told to you. You have to 'research' the story. If that makes sense. I mean, even if you don't research anything, or put anything together in the game, you still can sort of tell what happened, well, actually it's pretty obvious what the moral of the story is.

Stuff like character backround, demon backrounds, how stuff came to be, all the details basically, you do it yourself by putting it all together.

Yeah even though Dark Souls doesn't really feed you the story, I was still quite compelled by the main storyline (moreso by the gameplay, but still), and the ending was really satisfying. Each NPC also has their own storyline that fits into the bigger picture and that you can usually directly influence, so that's cool too.

Yeah, 99% of ME3 was amazing. If the last 1% of the game was as good as the first 99%, it'd be the best game of the generation, hands down.

As is, it's still pretty great because that first 99% is just that good.

I agree. It's a fantastic game. There's a few things besides the ending I didn't love, but nothing holds a candle to that last 1%...

Well, BioWare is putting out a free ending "patch" this summer for ME3. I doubt they'll actually change the ending itself, just add in some additional details to explain some things better.

So while the ending will still suck, maybe with the ending patch, it will suck a little less.

Also, Final Fantasy XIII does not fit these criteria. I've been watching a YouTube LP of it over the past few weeks (currently at shortly after Lightning and co. land on Gran Pulse) and that game doesn't really have a compelling story and characters, at least not compared to something like Super Mario RPG (which I've also been watching an LP of).
