So I've apparently been banned from their informal Brawl circle because I edgehog and air dodge effectively. Da ****?

I really don't understand the scrub type. These guys have invested thousands of hours into one game, and they're not even going to bother to get good at it? Whatever ugh, now I have to find another Wii to mooch off of

More importantly, why are you playing Brawl?

Laaaame. I guess I can sort of in a twisted way see the "dodging effectively" part since it's kind of low-risk and annoying in Brawl, but what are you supposed to do, not air dodge?

... how is he playing like an ass?

I mean, I don't exactly want to side with someone that calls people scrubs, but airdodging is just a simple mechanic built into the game for the purpose of being used, and not letting people back onto the ledges is pretty much the entire concept of Smash Bros.

There's such a thing as good sportsmanship though. Just because you can doesn't mean you should in 100% of instances. It's the reason you don't play with Ubers in Pokemon or you don't use a vintage Magic deck against someone who just got into the game. When it becomes no fun for people that are trying to have fun, you just lessen the play time. When I'm playing with anyone that hasn't played much, I typically play as someone like Ganondorf or Bowser so that they can at least be somewhat competitive.

The issue with me and my roommates is that my roommates don't have a competitive bone in their body, so they put no effort into trying to get good. My friend plays as Ike, and he admits he is a crappy character and he won't win with him, yet he plays as him because it is satisfying to get kills with him...

They don't yell at me for edge guardian but I should probably lay off sometimes >_>

Normally I'd agree with you: if you're playing with people for fun, there's no reason to go all Tournament Mode and ruin the vibe. But these guys are serious about Brawl. They play it constantly, I often hear them talking about different strategies (most of which are hilariously awful, but again, they take it seriously), etc. So when I come in and start doing basic stuff, they really shouldn't be complaining. Once I picked Ice Climbers and started chaingrabbing, and ho boy, almost ruined the party!

As for the air dodge complaint... yeah, that one's still an enigma to me. I think it's more code for "we don't like the way you're better than us at a game you hardly play." <_<

I'm not saying I blame people for using it. If they didn't have the foresight to get rid of it, you're free to use it. I just think it's kind of lame and takes the fun out of it, but I've never been into the tournament scene or anything.

Actually the reason that you don't play with Ubers in Pokemon is because it was decided by the community that the metagame that allows ubers is to some degree degenerate or overcentralized or what have you and thus Players agree to abide by a different set of rules than those enforced by the game. It's really not the same as not airdodging.

Airdodging is basically just like picking a team that doesn't suck. Fine a better example might be you don't bring your team with good EVs/IVs/natures to a fight where someone who doesn't know what EVs and IVs are, didn't care about natures and let the game autolevel them to 100 just to fight you. Maybe pokemon isn't a good example here...

And I generally find that when somebody starts complaining nonstop about something and says that I should be playing for fun or whatever, we are then playing different games and it kind of becomes pointless to keep playing since neither of us is enjoying it.

When I say I don't play with them, I'm not trying to be condescending or anything. I just realize that they have no interest in the game the way I do and we would be better off doing something else.

Do people seriously not "get" allowing someone to learn a game before you godstomp them? In the TC's case, sure, beat the crap out of them, they think they're awesome but they are just dumb and don't like to acknowledge that other strategies exist. But you can't tell me that someone's first game of anything is going to be fun if you're giving 100% and you could write a dissertation about the game.

Yeah, people who don't understand the "not going 100% to be nice to a new player just trying to have fun" don't make sense. If someone isn't worried about being competitive and wants to play a game with you purely for fun, you don't ruin their time by beating them into the ground. Think of it this way, if your 8 yr old nephew or something asks you to play smash with them, are you going to mercilessly beat their character and edge-guard them to death? (If you answer yes, never have children, they'll just hate you).

As for the original story. Probably could have eased up on the edge-guarding, its probably one of the more frustrating things if you don't play that way yourself and don't know what to do against it. Air-dodging thing is just stupid, not sure how you play smash seriously and not know how to air dodge...kind of a fundamental there. Otherwise, probably would have picked random if that's what they mainly do. Typically when I play with friends we all pick whatever, and I'll start choosing only random after a couple rounds to give myself a handicap, but sometimes all of us will pick random except for my one friend who will insist on choosing Kirby after using them for the past couple games and it's just kind of annoying.

I wouldn't do it to a child but a grown-ass man with gaming experience can certainly figure out how to be around something as "cheap" as edge-hogging. Hell, I've got a number of things cheaper than edge-hogging.

Also as a tournament player/state champion, whenever I play newcomers in tourney it's never cut and dry on how hard to go. If I don't go all out and use secondaries and play around, that could be offensive because I perceive them as someone not worth my time and effort and no one wants to be a play thing. On the other hand if I go MK and throttle them in 56 seconds with 40 damage, suddenly the game isn't fun anymore because they literally can't do anything and get completely demoralized as a player. Catch-22.

I always beat my friends at video games and I never go easy on them. They usually just get pissed and stop playing after failing a few times!

One of my favorites was a buddy who was SO confident he could beat me in Melee. Like, we trash talked for days. When the big day arrived, he chose Fox and I stomped him with Mr. Game and Watch... and Link!

Then I 6-Stocked his little brother with DK (who I never play as)

I've never seen Melee played in that house since (though I've seen Brawl a few times but LOLBRAWL)
