Naked City is like the definition of unfocused. I would've linked Leng T'che but drone doom is always a risky preposition.

Here, have some Boris.

VeryInsane's goal is to find that 10/10 song.

Let's start by finding some mainstream metal songs... Granted, I don't think you are going to give any of them 10/10, but they are all close to (or in case, really is) my favorite song by each band.

Hmm, should have specified the one song per post thing. Oh well, I'll make an exception since I hadn't said it yet, and because you've been suggesting the best stuff overall.

Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera
Live version, with Bruce? Yikes. He's got the wrong voice for this and is being way too showy. That said I still wish I'd gotten to hear this when I saw them live on the Somewhere Back in Time tour, would have been godly if I actually was there to see it <_< Just less so when recorded. Going to split this into two ratings, with this version being...less highly regarded. The original...I think I alluded to Fear of the Dark being up there with 3 other songs for "best Maiden song" (with Hallowed Be Thy Name *not* being one of them, although it's probably my number 5), and this is one of them. Loved it from the moment I first heard it.

Live: 7/10
Original: 8.5/10

Judas Priest - Painkiller
See it's the fact that you give me stuff like this that makes me happy when you post in this topic. I think I can get away with being brief here because even the people who don't think Painkiller is the best Priest album (and I'm one of them! Sad Wings and Stained Class ftw) will generally acknowledge that this song kicks ass. Great riffs, great intro, Halford is of course one of the definitive metal vocalists, and even solos that fit the song well (something Priest is generally pretty good for). Not much not to like here.

8/10

Megadeth - Holy Wars...the Punishment Due
And now we get one of the strongest songs on one of my favourite thrash albums? I'm happy now. Holy Wars... is a killer song that has a lot of variety going on (especially by thrash standards) and makes it work. First section is just good, solid thrash. I'll admit the transition into the second part is...a tad abrupt, but it's a relatively minor complaint. From there on we're going pretty slowly for a while, surprisingly, and I've never understood how Mustaine manages to make it work as well as he does vocally; he's not a great singer by any stretch of the imagination but he's able to get this part to actually feel kind of interesting. Then the transition is again a bit clunky, but the rest of the song is just relentless. This is why I love this album - it's a bit more complex and "progressive" (for lack of a better word) and technical than a lot of the genre, but it still retains a core of energetic, in your face thrash. Great song.

8.5/10

Oh, and if you're on a quest to find the one definitive 10/10 song in metal...you might be closer than you think! Not exactly "mainstream", but one of the bigger names of their sub-genre provide it. That may well be hint enough, we'll have to see.

Saying drone doom is a risky proposition and then suggesting Boris is pretty funny, given their tendency to stray across all kinds of weird genre lines and come close to it themselves! Although this particular song obviously isn't. I'm not a big fan of Boris, I've liked some stuff by them but too often they end up boring me. This is a lot more condensed than most of what I've heard from them, and I do kind of like, especially the production which is that fuzzed out old school sound I tend to approve of. It's actually perhaps slightly too much in that direction, but I won't be too harsh on them for that.

You know, I mistyped things a bit earlier. I said there's one definitive 10/10 song in general, and 2 in metal (and a non-metal song by a metal...ish...band) that I'd waver between 9.5/10 and 10/10 on. That's not really true. One of those two metal songs I would definitely give a 10/10, the other I'd grudgingly call 9.5/10 but consider it the best a 9.5 song can be.

From: Black_Hydras | #204
Rainbow - Stargazer

SPEAKING OF

This is, bar none, my favourite vocal performance in all of metal and probably all music. Dio was awesome his whole career and this is his crowning achievement, powerful, all the right emotions, and his part in the ending/outro is beyond stellar ("I see a rainbow rising, look there on the horizon! And I'm coming home..." being the highlight for me). He alone puts this song at a high ranking. Then we add in a very cool main riff during the verses, a spiffy chorus, a pretty good guitar solo, the short and sweet intro, and all in all we have a true classic. It's really only the outro being a fade out (which I'm usually not hugely keen on) and the solo being perhaps a little excessive at points that hold this song back from the top rating. One of my favourite songs of all time.

9.5/10

Yeah figures that as soon as "the hunt for the 10/10" comes up and I realize I should qualify my earlier statement, I get hit with one of the songs in question.

I'll admit. I won't post much mainstream stuff here. Most, if not all of it will at least be somewhat obscure, but I think it will all have something to offer.

Just wanted to get that out of the way.

Eluveitie - Slania's Song

I somehow doubt that "not mainstream" is necessarily bad to someone whose tastes in metal are largely focused on genres that don't get much play time, and whose best styles are generally criminally under appreciated.

Eluveitie isn't even what I'd consider that obscure! I thought they were fairly big in the whole folk metal craze of a few years ago that seems to have slowed down a bit by now. Anyway, the song. Eluveitie doesn't annoy me to the degree most folk metal does, they tend to be less prone to excess silliness than, say, Korpiklaani. This is a pretty interesting example in that pretty much every time the guitar takes center stage with prominent chugging, it kind of sucks, and when the folk elements are more pronounced...it's actually not bad. Kind of like the lead female vocalist here, she fits this music and the harsh vocals in the background work decently in contrast. I'm really surprised here, this is a lot of stuff I normally hate but I'm sort of enjoying this. It's not amazing but me not hating it is shocking enough to merit it an extra .5 over what it deserves, and thus...

Not one of the big four! Not anything King Diamond related either. I want to hint more but uh I've kind of said a million times where my preferences are and...I guess drawing attention to that again isn't giving it away, even if it does tell you what genre it's in.

So Mercyful Fate. Evil. Good name. Although King Diamond is pretty much the most obvious aspect of...anything he sings in...it's the guitar that I love here the most. Great riffs throughout the song. Oh fine I'll talk about King Diamond since everyone expects it. His style SHOULD infuriate me but somehow he pulls it off. Shrieks like a madman, but he's not bad when he's not doing that either. All in all, I like it and it's probably my favourite King Diamond related song as well.

My first thought is "what an unpleasant combination of sounds". That sticks around. This is pretty much a bunch of unfocused gibberish that doesn't go together at all and I don't see how listening to this beyond the obligatory first minute would be beneficial to my mood. Oh I made it far enough to get some atrocious female vocal section with the goofiest backing music ever. **** this ****

It's definitely death metal, my favourite genre. And the one no one on board 8 cares about and thus never posts. Go figure.

I'll say something controversial here: I don't get the obsessive worship Celtic Frost gets. Sure, they're pretty good. Yeah, this is a good song from a good album. I fail to see what makes them any more than "pretty good" and do not think they're anywhere near the nigh-untouchable status a lot of people put them at. So for the song at hand...same thing basically, good but not anything beyond that.

Hey, link I've clicked before. Song I'm thinking of fits that criteria...

But this isn't it. It is very good though! I think Altars of Madness is a bit overrated in general, but it's still a top 50 death metal album (probably in the 20-30 range, but the idea of ironing out my list beyond the top 8 or so is a daunting task). Maze of Torment is a good song, although it's no Chapel of Ghouls or Immortal Rites. Dark and evil, there's a good reason this album was one of the big influences for the death metal genre. Such a shame that the band ceased to exist and definitely did not release an album named Ilud Divinum Insanus, because if they did, I bet it would have been a god awful travesty of the highest proportions whose only use would be to establish officially that anyone who claimed to like it was an objectively bad person. Sorry, got a little carried away there.

7.5/10

What's the other band, incidentally? And if you ever feel the need to try getting into more death metal you know where to find me <_<

Nah, keep going, it's not like people don't get some sadistic amusement out of seeing me have to listen to stuff I think sucks.

Yeah if you like fairly standard harsh vocals are going to be off-putting you don't know me well enough yet <_< The clean(ish) vocals that pop up a bit are pretty annoying though! Overall this is...not good, but it's not really pissing me off. It's got that obnoxious tech death "let's throw random wanky stuff in every now and then" tendency going on but it's okay enough I guess. Wasn't exactly fond of the guitar solo either, although it didn't stick out enough to earn any scorn. High praise going on here, huh? "It didn't piss me off". Besides those clean vocals, they're ass. I didn't object to listening to this but wouldn't do so again.

3 Inches of Blood - Deadly Sinners

I seriously don't even need to listen to this (even though I will anyway) to do this write up, this song shows up in every single topic like this, every single topic I make about metal anywhere, I cannot possibly escape it. I don't care for the band, don't have strong opinions on it, but it haunts me in my dreams with its inescapable determination. I will wake up at 4:38am with it in my mind, tormenting me with the knowledge that even if I close this topic, it will have returned to me twice more this year. It isn't an every day occurrence, oh no. Then I'd be able to get used to it. It keeps itself hidden just long enough to let me forget about it a little, then it strikes. I am forced to remain eternally paranoid about its next appearance, only to inevitably relax and be caught off guard. Nothing I do will ever save me. If I ever commit suicide, I will do so while listening to this song, solely so that people are aware of the degree to which it has haunted me. And I was going along so well and you had to ruin it. Why do you hate me, Psycho Kenshin? You just like to ruin my entire ****ing life or something? I'm going to be eating dinner tomorrow with my family and trying to smile even though the grasping fingers of 3 Inches of Blood will be constantly on my brain, torturing me with their memory. I cannot escape it. I cannot fight it. I am powerless. It has conquered me. I am vanquished. The horror. The horror...

Once again you pick a band I like! Yeah, both are pretty standard, but as I've said, the mythical 10/10 song comes from a pretty standard death metal band too. Anyway Atheist is good, and I don't get how some people have such strong views on which out of Piece of Time and Unquestionable Presence is better. Preference, sure, but it astounds me how some people can love one and hate the other when they're not really *that* different (of course, most people seem to like both and that's where I fall, and hell I even don't hate Elements). Spiffy thrashy death metal with some other influences thrown in, and yeah Unquestionable Presence ramps those up a bit but it's never struck me as a huge enough change, not when the underlying core is still strong. Well this has been a pretty fluff-heavy review, hasn't it?

Probably hard to recognize people in the video when I spend most of the time looking at the page I'm typing on rather than watching it <_<

Okay that was kind of a "bleh" intro leading into...eh. Chugging death metal with some keyboards that feel out place and then some clean vocals that are even more out of place. I swear, one band has ever made keyboards in death metal really work, and even then they didn't do a whole lot of it (Bloodsoaked, from Mexico; shame they only put out one full length album). I don't really have much more to say beyond "meh". Lots of words ending in "eh". I like that sound. Oh god am I Canadian?! I don't say it much though, I only type it!

3.5/10

Who was I theoretically capable of recognizing in the video? I only watched about fifteen seconds total of it.

Well I don't really LIKE it, I just hear it way too much.

Hmm, Vader. Now this is a band that I really am underexposed to relative to how big and prolific a career they've had. The first minute or so is pretty solid, then when we get into the vocals it's a bit weaker, going for a the kind of chaotic death metal approach of, say, Deicide or maybe Sinister, not doing it too well but not shabby either. Definitely don't care for the slower section around two and a half minutes in; once again, not THAT bad but it doesn't really work for me and drags on a bit. Guitar solos afterward feels really, REALLY out of place. Once those are done I'm feeling a bit better about these verses, I guess the middle section lowered my standards enough to make me like the rest of the song more. That is...a very odd way for a song to earn praise <_<

You know, this topic makes it hard for me to listen to my own music. But it does mean I get to keep restarting the song I'm listening to, and given that it's my early "best song of 2012" I think I'm cool with that!

Yay Dismember. Well liked by 235, well liked by me, still not who I'm thinking of <_< Their debut album is indeed their best (as is rather common in metal), although I do enjoy most of their work. Dismembered is quite the good song, the intro is a good example of how to do melodic death metal and guitar solos and all that stuff properly, then a fairly abrupt shift comes and gives us the classic Swedish death metal sound. Guitar tone like a chainsaw, somewhat thrashy riffs, and while at first I didn't care hugely for the vocals on this album, over time I've come to appreciate them a lot. Like an Everflowing Stream is probably a top 10-20 death metal album for me, maybe in the top 10 even, and Dismembered is one of the better songs on it (can't top the beastly Override of the Overture though). Fun stuff.

So after all a couple of years where I take every chance I can to recommend Zuul to people, someone finally recommends them to me. Sweet.

At first this was my favourite song on the album, though by now I've settled into liking the title track and Return to Yagi the most (first and last song, look at that). The guitar tone really makes this song, giving the main riff a ton of weight to it, and you can't not love that pre-chorus/chorus. Well you can, but I might look at you funny. Well, maybe not, but I certainly wouldn't buy you a drink if we met some day. Okay this is getting a little silly, Out of Time is a great album that I listen to a lot, Warhammer is a very good song, people should listen to these guys.

If I didn't make it hard to get high scores, then it wouldn't mean anything when I did give them out!

Well that intro was kind of lame and oh. Oh my. This wouldn't be bad if the vocals were good. Or hell, if they were bad. That's a lot better than what they actually are! With how terrible they are and the lyrics being kind of..."questionable"...I'm questioning whether this is serious or a deliberate joke. In any event I give up after two minutes.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force

Why does Yngwie need to partially name his band Rising Force, make it the name of his debut album, and then have it be the name of a song on a different album? Do you see how confusing this is?

So yeah I don't like Yngwie although I actually DO find the Rising Force album enjoyable. This song just feels like kind of generic heavy/power metal, the main problem is really that the vocalist has absolutely no energy or presence at all. And the obligatory guitar/keyboard solo duel (well, the keyboard part isn't obligatory but the guitar part obviously is for Yngwie Malmsteen) isn't really anything special. So this is...eh, I guess it's not awful or anything, it's more dull than anything and the vocals suck.

That's a lot better than what they actually are! With how terrible they are and the lyrics being kind of..."questionable"...I'm questioning whether this is serious or a deliberate joke. In any event I give up after two minutes.

I'm a big fan of some bands that have fun and have some comedy as part of what they do, but are still damn good rockers touring the clubs kicking ass. That gent on the vocals there Phil, I've seen that dude many a time, also love his Bee Gees metal tribute band Tragedy. They can be funny while kicking ass, but it's no joke, that's how I'd put it.

Hmm. Oh right, I'm listening to something? Takes a while to get going. So yeah this spoken word thing is kind of lame. Vocals in general aren't doing much for me (this sounds like a constipated James Hetfield <_< ). Pretty boring overall really.

I feel like I probably stated my feelings on Motley Crue earlier in the topic as "kind of unremarkable but fun". That pretty much covers all I have to say about this song.

A thought just occurred, it would be funny if I disliked every video of a song that didn't get a good rating from me. Not a comment on this song, it occurred before it even started.

Although it turns out to be a comment on this song too! The intro is kind of okay but things just go downhill from there, generic metal riffs and some really bad accompanying folky stuff, complete with obnoxious vocals. All we need is a breakdown and a wanky guitar solo and we'll have the full complement of crap. In fairness, while this does suck, it doesn't suck *that* hard. It's not one of the worst things I've had to listen to in this topic or anything.

But yeah Chapel of Ghouls is good stuff and one of those songs that deserves the fad status it got on 235 (and no one will ever guess what other random fad song I really like). Take what I said about Maze of Torment earlier and apply it here, only slightly better.

Not that one <_< I think I'm talking about a slightly bigger/more well known fad than BOAT RUDDER STRANGE MOUNTAIN.

Oh right Sarco***o, whose name will, as always, trip the GameFAQs censor. "Yay". They're another "good but overhyped" band to me, and I like a ****ton of stuff they inspired more than I do them. Still enjoyable though!

Agalloch - Fire Above, Ice Below

You know I really ought to clarify my earlier folk metal stance <_< It's not just Primordial, Skyclad and Moonsorrow that I don't hate in the genre, Agalloch fits in there too, and some folks would probably be pretty surprised to hear my opinion on a particular song by them whose identity is in no way linked to me saying that The Mantle is my favourite of their albums and pretty high up there overall for me.

That said, Ashes Against the Grain isn't really that spectacular. Feels like it drags on way more and individual sections of it are just weaker in general than their previous two albums (haven't heard Marrow of the Spirit yet so no comment on it, nor have I heard any of their EPs to judge). This song isn't bad, but it's one of those "I'm only halfway through?" songs where you just don't feel like it has enough material to really fill out how long it is. It just kind of goes on and on and doesn't really lead to anything in the way of a satisfying payoff. Still, I do enjoy it.

Immortal - Call of the Wintermoon

Best music video ever, naturally. We have Immortal to thank for the trend of black metal music videos where people wander around oddly coloured forests in corpse paint and doing weird ****, a trend that has produced many laughs over the years. The music itself is pretty standard early Norwegian black metal fare, although I think Immortal's crowning moment was Pure Holocaust. Resisting the urge to give out an 11.5/10 for the video, this gets...

At the Gates - Blinded By Fear

Oh boy, Slaughter of the Soul. One of the worst things in metal as far as influence goes, with nearly every bad trend in metalcore coming from people being inspired by it. But that's what other people did in reaction to it, how does it stand up on its own? Well...not that well. It's not awful, but it feels very bland and "by the numbers", even if it wasn't *that* generic when they did it because they kind of helped it get so overplayed. It's pretty sad to have something like this come from the band that produced The Red in the Sky is Ours, which kicks ass.

You would post this right after a post about At the Gates where I referenced TRitSiO being good <_<

So yeah, I like this. Vocals are very tortured, which is a bit of an over used phrase but it does hold true in this case, and the riffs are pretty good. I will say that I don't get why Kingdom Gone in particular is a song that gets singled out so much, I much prefer Within. And my favourite thing on the album is actually the interlude track The Scar. That all adds up to something. To what? To infinity and beyond, of course. Yeah...

I remember the week or so where absolutely every topic on 235 was about TRitSiO. "Good times".

Ah Demilich. Nespithe is my second favourite death metal album of all time, so this is probably going to get a good rating! Love pretty much everything about it, the production is great, everything is audible and the guitars have a very distinctive feel, the riffs are all over the place, varying things up frequently and always interesting, lot of cool drumming going on, even the bass is a noticeable presence for good, and of course the vocals which I still can't understand how anyone could do. That was probably really awful grammar, I apologize. So yeah, good song, even being one of the less memorable tracks on the album doesn't stop it from kicking ass.
