it's the same reason people complain about Warcraft III item drops for instance, just a lot more severe. if there's something game-changing and it's reasonably random it probably wont work well in a competitive game.

But it still takes skill to beat your opponent to the ball, break it open (without simply damaging it and giving your opponent a free shot), and land the attack itself (with some exceptions but it's impossible to balance everything 100%).

I'm not sure why you say it's not skill-related. Can you elaborate?

the big problem with Final Smashes(aside mostly being hideously OP or terrible) are they are not a consistently available option(and actually remove some to activate) nor do they use a resource to use for the consistency, and some outright change into a different character completely(Hi Samus).

there's also the moronic way of getting them, which is up to chance most the time.

There would be skill in getting the smash ball if there was any sort of method to the way it spawns other than "random"

It can literally spawn on a character there's really no skill in getting it there.

But yeah they're hideously OP is probably the main reason to nuke em really, even more than randomness. I'm pretty sure some are literally undodgeable.

Man they could have made final smashes so aweso.. scratch that, they could have made BRAWL so awesome. They could have fixed the broken final smashes and made it so that the smash ball still floats around the stage randomly but it floats for 3-5 seconds before it becomes hittable. That way if it spawns on top of someone then everyone else still has a chance to get over there before you can damage it.

And I will say that in like... 80% of the possible locations for a Smash Ball to spawn at any given time there will be skill involved.

But still, 20% of spawns flipping a match is pretty dumb.

Though I mean even if they spawned the way you say I'd say axe them because the match turning into "grab the smash ball or lose" at random points would be bad. Now if they were something resembling balanced and spawned the way you said, like you were saying would be cool, then yeah, they'd probably be allowed.

Items in Brawl are kinda just botched. I almost think the designers put stuff like tripping and absurd items in to actively discourage competitive play, hearing the dude's stance on competitive play. Not sure why they'd intentionally piss off part of the fanbase but what are you gonna do.

This tournament is ass


- Paid bracket and tournament organizers not updating brackets and instead running off and playing Brawl casuals instead of updating SSF4 / Marvel brackets.

- Speakers weren't even given to the SF/Marvel - people had to shout out players names for 12+ hours.

- Being relegated to the lobby, not the actual ballroom hall.

- No real ventilation/air conditioning to speak of

- Being massively delayed. I think Noel Brown even said that after several hours people had only played one match or none at all.

- Stream problems galore. Bracket organizers (when doing their job) wouldn't relegate top players on the stream. In fact one of the commentators pretty much had to beg people to get on the stream station.

- Not following the schedule, and in fact putting Mortal Kombat on when it wasn't supposed to be on.
