Initially it was only going to be in theaters one day, but it seems like they decided to extend it to a week long run time through to the 23rd. If you miss it then I think you'll have to wait and see where it ends up streaming at, not sure they've announced that yet or not.

Seeing a midnight screening~, probably no thoughts until tomorrow night. I have no clue what to expect!

1. M3GAN
2. She Came From the Woods
3. Knock at the Cabin
4. Infinity Pool
5. Consecration
6. Fear
7. The Outwaters
8. Skinamarink

A pleasant surprise, for sure. With seeing these 3 films over the last 3 days, I really figured what ended up being the best would have been the worst, and what was the worst I figured would have been the best. Funny how that happens. Despite its billing as a "horror comedy", I didn't really get that from this movie honestly. It has moments but I guess when I think of horror comedy my mind tends to drift to over the top stuff like Scary Movie or Army of the Dead. In no way was SCFtW related to those two films, much to my delight because I don't really like heavy handed horror parody.

More thoughts for Consecration:

A pretty well told story and squarely "above average" in the realm of "religious themed horror movie". I will say that the biggest downfall of the movie is just that it isn't all that scary. It has a few moments that are a little chilling but I expected a little more in terms of that, but maybe that would have been too heavy handed. It's a pretty good overall experience though, better than I was expecting from it.

Thoughts for She Came From the Woods:

I'd classify this movie as more of homage than a parody of horror, clearly inspired by Friday the 13th since it takes place in the same time period the original was set in and features a camp. This time though the acting is better and the direction is as well. It's filled with tropey characters and good bit of blood and guts, and I feel like it's a pretty immersive story despite the large cast of characters. It never really suffers that much from that because of how much the characters are tropes; it's hard to mistake one for another, for sure. It definitely has some moments that can catch you off guard. Good stuff.

We're at She Came From the Woods. Further thoughts later, but Consecration was actually good. It could be that I appreciate it more after watching nonsense but it was refreshing to see a story that was coherent.

Yeah... nah...

1. M3GAN
2. Knock at the Cabin
3. Infinity Pool
4. Fear
5. The Outwaters
6. Skinamarink

I said this with Skinamarink and I feel like somewhat of a neanderthal putting the two "experimental" films right at the bottom, but it is what it is. If I have to go to Wikipedia (which didn't help) or Reddit to figure out what's going on, it really isn't the hallmark of a great film in my eyes.

I have to concur with Biscuit on this. The last act of the film meanders in such a way that it brought it down to near Skinamarink levels for me, as in, "Can't this just end already?". It's a lot of darkness, a lot of camera jerking and a lot of stuff you can't really see happening. And the stuff you can see just doesn't tend to make very much sense and I don't like a film as much if things are explained well. I'm not saying everything needs to have a backstory like Lord of the Rings, but I feel like these days people who can't really write stories get by with it by having the excuse of, "the film isn't supposed to tell you about that". It's irritating and one of the biggest issues I feel modern horror faces. As people try to be unique and experimental, I think they lose sight of what making a movie is about. To each his own I suppose, but this style just isn't for me.

There are also some strange flaws I've found with the premise of this being a found footage film as well. Like, how is does he have footage of what we're led to believe is himself while he's holding the camera? Or how does he have footage of his mother's home when he's so far away in the desert? I guess again, I'm just not "getting it". It's pretty frustrating because I feel like found footage is a genre that can be good and just usually isn't. Typically it isn't for the reasons this one isn't, but yeah.

Yikes, I can't say I saw that coming. Not going to click on the spoiler block yet, but the ending you describe sounds a lot like a film we saw years ago, It Comes At Night. Upon that film ending, someone a few rows up from us said "... that's it, really?" and it got lots of laughter from the theater. Not a really good sign.

A couple more films are hitting theaters; Consecration and She Came From the Woods. Neither are really films that I'd normally go out for but I'm holding myself to do the best attempt at seeing as many releases this year as I can. Genny usually can get us free tickets, but only if her theater has picked up the movies. Unfortunately, neither of these films were big enough to pick up but living in Atlanta gives up plenty of opportunity to catch virtually any release even if it's limited.

Another religious horror film vs. horror comedy/parody. Probably will try to see one on Sunday and the other Monday night.

The Gobert trade can't really be defended, because outside of a few 20/20 games he's not been a good fit. He hasn't played well without Towns, and they didn't play well together. Granted it was a small snapshot, but that's the past and we're locked into Gobert for a while now. No changing that. I feel like trying to pile on Minnesota for this trade is just an attempt to be funny though, because like I said I don't think this was a bad move. Russell probably wasn't coming back next season unless the Wolves went on a good run in the playoffs, because he'd always be behind Edwards and Towns and I think he probably thinks he can do more than that. Granted now he's behind AD and Lebron. I doubt he'll be resigning with the Lakers either though. They already got rid of him once. If he wasn't traded now I feel like the same people would call Minnesota dumb for not trying to get something for him and letting him walk.

Conley is a good fit for us. He can play with Gobert and hopefully improve the team. He's also not a star player or will try to be, which is what we need because we're supposed to have two stars already.

Russell's contract expired at the end of this season; trading him now for value rather than letting him just walk away makes sense. The Wolves get Conley, who spent the last 3 years played with Gobert on pretty good Jazz teams. The chemistry with Russell and the rest of the team has been spotty at best. I'm not sure what's to really be made a big deal out of this; it isn't a bad trade. Most analysts have been projecting the Wolves trying to get Conley for a while now.

Knock at the Cabin watched tonight.

Interesting to watch a MNS film with NO twist and that's the twist of it. I did read the book synopsis which sounds much, much darker but on a film rated on PG-13 I wouldn't expect them to kill a 7 year old child. Also when casting Bautista as Leonard you have to make him the final one of the horsemen left alive too. That being said, I think it was pretty solid and I liked it more than Old. Not his best work, but nowhere near his worst either. Probably right in the center for me. I did really love some of the characters here, notably I really though Leonard and Andrew were extremely well acted.

I've got 5 films under my belt now, not even counting Missing! Time for the birth of my 2023 list.

1. M3GAN
2. Knock at the Cabin
3. Infinity Pool
4. Fear
5. Skinamarink

A few extra thoughts I had on Infinity Pool...

I do appreciate Mia Goth's acting ability here and the switch her character made during the film. I think there were some really interesting elements to explore here, and sometimes it did explore those elements but ultimately the film did a few things to turn me off at times. I do admit it's a tough task for a film to make an unlikable protagonist likable, but this film did it by creating really awful villains. I guess I just didn't like that James went from being resolute to literally sucking from a teet. And the orgy scene went on like forever. I dunno.

Also when we saw Infinity Pool, we also saw the trailers for some films I hadn't heard of/seen before. I was aware of Inside with Dafoe previously but this was the first time I actually watched the trailer. Interesting to see if it'll really be horror or not, probably fringe to the genre like The Lighthouse I imagine. That said, he's an incredible actor and we'll go see it regardless. I wasn't aware that the Children of the Corn remake/reboot was actually done and coming out in March; that's so fast. The original has some old campiness to it but it'll always hold a special spot in my heart. The final was Bunker, which after the trailer I'm expecting big things from.

I really do like the game, but the ending does seem like the weakest aspect. I think if you compare it to the Dark Pictures games, I would say it would probably be amongst the better ones from that series but most of those games have better conclusions. I feel like most of the storylines between the characters didn't matter at the very end, and the fact there's nothing you can do to help Silas or Chris and still have a good ending kind of sucks.

Still though, you get to see Deputy Dewey one more time. Have to mark out for that.

So Fear wasn't nearly as bad as the review scores would have you believe, at least not its RT score. I guess that's all based on only positive versus negative reviews though, which is kinda difficult. It's just one of those films I wouldn't give an thumbs up or a thumbs down to, but if you're a critic it has to be Fresh or Rotten.

Ultimately, I think it's a lot like Snake said. There's an interesting premise here, and at times it seems like it's being executed well. I think the shortcomings of the film are that it's just too short, so the back half is really loaded with too many lightning quick scenes after the first acts of the film are more of a slow burn. It's hard to be that slow out of the gate when your run time is listed at around 90 minutes. The acting also leaves something to be desired of at times... I think it's mostly that no one in the film is really good enough to portray the main characters. The actors portraying the supporting cast feel like they do a better job, probably because they have less screen time and don't have to do as much. The film also sadly has final girl syndrome which I am so done with at this point. But, it definitely didn't illicit hang-wringing or questions like "what am I doing with my life", so it was no Skinamarink!

Planning to see our third horror film of the year Monday with Fear... the early reviews, both critical and audience wise, seem pretty abysmal though. It would take an especially bad film to unseat Skinamarink from the bottom of my list this year though. I say that understanding the film just "wasn't for me", but it was probably the worst theater going experience of my life given the nature of the movie and the pace/length.

But here's hoping for fans of super indie experimental horror! Maybe Fear will somehow do it.

I never took his "Jimmy the church guy" thing as legit and assumed Kevin was in on the scheme all along. I don't believe he tricked Kevin into it; Kevin was a career con-artist and I think he willfully was participating. After all, when he believed he was talking to him but wasn't, he said he did everything to divert suspicion away from him. I also don't think he needed to manipulate the algorithm, he simply knew enough about his ex-wife to give Kevin the perfect combination to match with her

Johnbobb posted...
Saw Missing, very good and extremely tense and suspenseful throughout, and a killer soundtrack.

My only complaint: looking back after all the twists have resolved themselves, it ultimately doesn't make much sense

I dunno, I didn't really notice any real plotholes. I think everything ended up making good sense to me. I will say... I dunno, another "dad bad" story is kinda eh to me, but it is well executed

Like with Searching, saying this is a horror movie is... a little hard for me. Certainly it picks up and becomes more like one at points, but it's still questionable.
