The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Invitation is sadly a bit typical vampire schlock. It's not terrible, but unfortunately the trailer like spoils the entire film. You basically see the entirety of it, which isn't really the movie's fault but it plays out pretty much as you'd expect. The acting is fairly good at least but the script isn't particularly memorable.

Upon reflection, I've thought a lot about Fall and all the cleverness of that film. From the drama they're able to produce on such a limited setting, and while it may not fit the "typical" horror film I think it has enough merits to be considered on the list.

The Ring was a long time ago but that still is probably enough to get me to see it. It's probably not the most popular opinion but The Ring is better than Ringu.

We're off to see a midnight screening of The Invitation.

I also saw Fall today. I think it leans more thriller than horror (depending on your aversion to heights), but it was surprisingly really good. For those out of the know because it hasn't had much advertising, it's about two girls who climb up to the top of a defunct telephone tower and then they get trapped up there. Good stuff.

Finally got around to see it last night. We both liked it! I think it definitely has some good moments of horror in it for sure, though it does err more on the side of a survival film. But even if you don't have a fear of heights it should still be pretty anxiety inducing.

Also the reveal scene where Hunter is dead and Becky has been hallucinating her presence for a while after she falls was legitimately pretty startling to me. I didn't see it coming and for her to suddenly become a talking corpse in the middle of a conversation did sent shivers down my spine. It still unnerves me to think about actually. Very effective.

Obviously the film has some flaws, like the dad and daughter relationship is a bit lacking in the development department and sort of thrown in there. The movie shines when it has the two main characters in isolation. I like that the film bases the tower on a real tower that does exist and uses actual footage of it (with CGI as well obviously). Another really cool surprise of a film.

Our watch of Beast will probably have to wait until next week now though.
