I work at a dealership, and I love when people demand to be put in a loaner vehicle for routine maintenance that takes 45 minutes. Or even better, when they waltz in after 5pm for various things because their salesperson promised we'd "take care of it for them".

the minimum repairs to pass inspection are all front and rear suspension bushings, front upper control arms (because their bushings aren't serviceable), front ball joints, steering rack dust boots (which require me to take off the outer tie rod and get an alignment), and various small things like tag lights

that's not including stuff like the leak in the timing cover, the soft top, or a well past overdue timing belt. those can all be postponed, but I should consider them when deciding whether to keep the vehicle

I can do these repairs myself if I leave it in my driveway while I go to work every day, or I can pay a shop out the nose for labor.

I don't really want to fix it because I'm looking at close to $500 in parts, plus a host of non-safety-related repairs that need to be done as well, like installing a new soft top. it's a 27 year old daily driver Miata so I don't feel like putting it up on stands for weeks at a time while I go about my day to day business. I can't really drive it either because it has a bright red "REJECTED" sticker that's a magnet for cops. I have 14 days leeway to get a new inspection, but it won't be fixed by then, plus it doesn't stop police from pulling me over (which they will, they get boners for easy traffic violations like these)

fuck, I can't afford a new car right now. time to go beg the bank for a loan that doesn't have a double digit interest rate
