I bigtime object to this. Minecraft is basically this now and it's 9 years old now. some people have super strong feelings on the PS2 GTA games that are nearing 20. Halo 1 is 17 and there are people who praise that campaign as the absolute greatest.

people my age or older often derided FF7 and OOT the same way that you're doing with the younger generations. games today aren't unique here. what is unique is the social experiences people can have thanks to the internet, easily connected games, twitch etc, and how the concept of the big tentpole single player game is falling off. Nintendo's doing its best to keep it alive and things like Horizon exist, but they're pretty far between now.

I'd agree with this but only in the sense that it's the hot new thing. As soon as the next new hot game comes out everyone will move on to that. If Mario Odyssey came out in the 90s it would be nigh eternal, but the social media fueled landscape for today only favors discussion of the newest games, which are swiftly forgotten as far as popular discussion is concerned once something else comes out to talk about.

I just mean in the sense of it being a Big Deal, you know when it's coming out release. I'd be curious to hear you name the last one before God of War. it's probably Odyssey.

1-4's weird but otherwise good ranking. I like seeing E2-4 in the top 10 and 5-6 as the game's best case. most people wouldn't have that, from what I see.

I think you mean a single player game to get immersed into that everyone played and loved? that's a dying thing in general. the biggest games now are largely social experiences. those games are huge, bigger than ff7 or oot ever were, but they're not singular like oot is.
