I never thought about that one. You make a good point.

For me, the one that bugs me the most is characters becoming atheists because something bad happened to them. Ive known a lot of atheists in my life, many of whom have experienced trauma, but not one of them became an atheist because of that trauma; they became atheists because of self-reflection and evaluation of evidence, so to see atheism used as some cheap device to make characters edgier feels like its painting an unrealistic picture, and one that does a disservice to a lot of people.

That one annoys me too. The "angry at God" thing is kinda lame, especially when the finale is the guy finding his faith again. I just can't relate to that.

This one maybe bothers me the most.

The hero will fight his way through countless hordes of canon fodder, never stopping to think about how they died just to give the audience some exposition on how badass our protagonist is.

And then, the hero encounters the big bad villain, and...lets them live? Big bad gets free, does a bunch more heinous shit, over and over. That amazing lack of restraint rears its head any time the person in the way doesn't matter to the plot.

Batman is good for this. He doesn't mind brutally maiming all of Gotham City's low level thugs but he'll get all soft when it's the joker who's face he's about to bash in.

For your own sanity, here's my seasoned reddit veteran advice

  • everyone is a liar, a bullshitter and a goober
  • Don't believe anything you read
  • Just assume everyone you talk to is either 14 or a 32 year old manchild
  • Don't think that upvotes = someone is right and downvotes = someone is incorrect

Nobody says "we must be allowed to ask questions about evolution" unless they're a creationist who want their religion taught in school science classes, because if you don't have an agenda, it's pretty obvious to you that you are allowed to ask questions about evolution, or in this case corona. Usually what is interpreted as not being allowed to ask questions is when being called out on being a conspiracy theorist with an agenda.

Indeed. "We should be allowed to ask questions" is sady code for "I didn't ask questions, do any actual real research and I can provide no better ideas that you haven't already thought of and investigated, but I don't like what you're saying".

Fuckers on twitter and the internet in general think being a skeptic is just dismissing established positions and providing nothing else.

So I made a bit of a boo boo.

We were remoted onto a client's computer. The client was away in a meeting and we were working on it. Co-worker was doing some SQL stuff. I didn't have any input at that stage so I just left the session open in case I was needed.

I start chatting with someone on whatsapp web. I was giving my friend a jokey hard time, and wrote out "Christ, you're a miserable c***", and then decided to save that choice insult for later, so I ctrl+X'd it.

See where I'm going with this? The remote software we use apparently shares everyone's clipboards when you have a session open together. So the next bit of SQL my coworker tried to paste in - she copied my insult right onto the client's computer.

Fortunately, the client was nowhere near. So how to handle that?

1) delete it immediately, let me know what I did, call me a silly bastard and move on
2) leave it on screen, call general manager and escalate it immediately

She chose 2. For fuck's sake.

I should be a bit more specific. I don't mean puzzle games where you just build things to progress, like polybridge or sim city.

I mean combat/action/rpg games where you kill things and defend yourself using contraptions and upgrade your gear using machines etc. you make. Games where you base build.

In a lot of games there's an engineer class where you can do more of these things, but I don't know of any where that is the focus?

Subnautica was hot shit and I loved that, although I guess it's not technically a fighting game. Still, that's right on track.

Was there a coked up board meeting that caused this?

CEO: You know what would be good? Touch pads where you could click on things instead of pressing buttons to do that instead.
Engineer: Well yes, maybe, however we'd need to figure out a consistent way to drag and drop, and some rules around clicking. Naturally we'd drop the left and right mouse buttons altogether.
CEO: No keep those, those are great. More features are great. But instead of the buttons, just make the entire track pad one big button that you press in when you need to click. And make sure that any taps are registered as clicks too.
Engineer: Well I mean, you're just gonna have people accidentally clicking things, losing control of what they've dragged, and unable to distinguish between left and right clicks altogether
CEO: Just do that Apple thing. Two fingers together means right mouse clicks! And a hard press and hold means you want to drag something.
Engineer: Ok, so we don't need the entire trackpad to be one impossible button then?
CEO: Have you not been listening to a word? I said keep everything.

It felt incredibly short, which made me wonder if it was any shorter than the original games, and turns out it's probably actually 30% longer.

The reason it felt short is obvious - it lets you continue from the last stage. The original games had you playing them for what felt like the best part of a year trying to get to the end because any time you died you'd go back to Stage 1.

I can only assume they were this way due to hardware limitations or to kind of cheat you into thinking you had tonnes of replayability.

I really don't miss that aspect of gaming.
