What I tell all the new guys I lift with is to leave your ego at the door so you don't hurt yourself trying to handle something outside your strength, especially if you don't have a spotter.

This is honestly the best tip for anyone starting weight training. Don't let someone else's pace dictate yours. Have a goal in mind and get there progressively.

Also, if you've never lifted before, just know you'll get crazy gains for the first few months, so don't expect it to stay that way.
