I'm trying to show that those examples are not the most successful mobile games of all time

I definitely agree you can have successful games without them, to some extent, but the top of the top most successful generally does use that sort of thing. In much the same way that lootboxes are a common thing for the biggest games in PC gaming (and sometimes console too I suppose), they're a common thing for the biggest games in mobile gaming too. things like flappy bird (which is a bit old for this discussion but that's another point entirely) are like the equivalent of those indie games that are "massively successful" and yet pale in comparison to actual big games

I guess it depends exactly how you define "successful" (and honesty I'm not even sure if clash of clans has lootboxes or just the usual inapp purchases) but it's pretty clear that you don't rake in the big bucks in mobile gaming by just being a normal game

If you pull something great that you don't want from a TCG/CCG pack you can sell it. If there's something you really want you can find someone selling it and buy it directly instead of gambling away your money hoping to obtain it by chance.

The first part of this doesn't really make it any less gambling, though. In fact, spending money for a chance to get money is basically how gambling works.

The big thing is that it enables the second part of this statement, which is that it becomes possible to by individual contents of packs directly

I have never spent any money on these sorts of things, so it's not quite that in my (and I know many others') cases. It's that I want the entire system and structure of this sort of thing to die so that it can get out of the way of games actually being good

that's not quite what I was trying to get at overall, was more just a small part of the difference

the part that I think makes the biggest difference is the ease of buying a lot in bulk and the immediate gratification (or sadness) you get from them. With something like a pack of baseball cards you only really can have either one of those rather than both.

another big thing games do that really bugs me (and this one isn't a comparison to physical stuff) is giving you some slow trickle of that premium currency usually for log-in bonus or first game of the day bonus or etc. It's a way to worm it into your schedule so that you start the game up and are bombarded by advertising every day, for what is essentially pennies. And on the every-so-often when you can actually afford to get something, you get to see first hand how cool and useful and awesome the premium currency is so that you buy more

these are all much harder to inadvertantly purchase in massive quantities and (for some of them, at least) resaleable. which are both significant, the first more than the second

games tend to use a passthrough digital currency (eg gems / stones / gold / etc) and aren't actually buying a physical thing, which makes it easier to spend an absurd amount without really realizing it

it sorta bothers me when anti-lootbox stuff focuses too much on children because it makes it sound like the issue is mostly "children don't know what they're doing and must be protected". Which is at least somewhat true, so it doesn't stand out as that odd, but it obscures the more sinister "publishers are psychologically exploiting players to deliberately foster an addiction to gambling/gamblingesque mechanics"

I think it sucks

but I also don't understand most people who say it sucks because all they do is complain about the controls. the controls are the only reason the game is remarkable at all and it would suck even more with normal controls

instrumentals that are just removing the vocal track from a song that otherwise has them loses the melodic line a lot of the time, which is more than just losing the lyrics

unless you just meant music without any vocal parts at all, which is already mostly what I listen to since lyrics are of negative(?) importance to me

I don't think I'd recommend pokemon stadium as a first time pokemon experience overall, but to someone more familiar with the modern series it might be an interesting look at how different the first two generations were

almost every mechanic in that game had been in previous Zelda titles except now you're forced to do it with motion controls because???

did you even play skyward sword? the majority of its enemies and puzzles were designed around moving your sword in specific ways or slashing at specific angles or anything, the motion controls were a great fit for what the game was

like maybe you don't like motion controls and that's fine since they can be a bit finnicky sometimes but it definitely wasn't a "press B to swing sword -> swing hand to swing sword" sort of change

they need to speed up the stack again, I just cast march of the multitudes for 13 with inspiring commander, dawn of hope, and path of discovery in play (so a lifegain+draw, an optional draw, and an explore trigger for each one) and it took forever

I was mildly tempted to then immediately cast my second one for x=27 to see how long that would take but I would have lost <_<
