indeed, the point is more that leading the world hegemon somewhat inherently means making a choice with no right answer:

do you:

1) order a drone strike that will result in the deaths of 47 foreign civilians, but also kill 6 terrorists with a known plot to kill 46 american soldiers?
2) not order the strike, and risk the lives of those american soldiers, knowing you have no guarantee of quality intel about their plot and how to stop it?

no american president in the last hundred or so years has been innocent.

obviously many of the choices are less grey and grey and more black and grey, with the black answer being tied to financial interest and corruption, and it being chosen.

we should still demand better, of course.

Iran doesnt have to, but if their country is crippled economically from sanctions then North Korea demonstrated that the best way to prevent an invasion is to get nuclear weapon capabilities and then re-negotiate.

North Korea also demonstrated that by playing that game it isolated itself to the point that it couldnt support its own people and let many of them starve to death. Then ultimately they gave in.
